At Isenberg & Hewitt, we work alongside victim advocates, and on occasion in concert with other lawyers and law enforcement, to ensure survivors of violent crime and their family members are supported at every step.

From sexual assault and child molestation cases, to negligent security, human trafficking and abuse at nursing homes and behavioral institutions, we hold all applicable parties accountable when their actions or failures result in injury or death.

And we don’t do it alone. We collaborate with advocates, colleagues, co-counsel and law enforcement in helping victims and their families navigate, heal, find resources and take the necessary steps to get the justice they deserve.

House Bill 945 aims to protect Georgia's seniors by allowing financial institutions to temporarily hold suspicious transactions involving adults 65+ or disabled individuals. It also encourages the use of “trusted contacts,” adding another layer of protection when something seems off.

This is progress, but prevention starts with awareness. Families should talk openly about finances, monitor accounts and know where to turn if concerns arise.

A new law would give banks a tool to temporarily delay certain transactions when there is reasonable cause to suspect financial exploitation.

It takes courage to reach out to an attorney and hearing “no” can feel discouraging. But a declined case doesn’t mean your experience isn’t valid.

At Isenberg & Hewitt, we carefully evaluate every case based on key factors like evidence, legal timelines, responsibility and the ability to pursue justice in court. Sometimes, even when harm is clear, legal barriers or limitations can stand in the way.

A step forward for survivors in Georgia.

A new bipartisan bill heading to Brian Kemp could extend how long sexual assault evidence is preserved, from just 12 months to up to 10 years.

Many survivors need time before coming forward and critical evidence should still be there when they do. Preserving evidence longer protects survivors’ rights and strengthens the path to justice when they’re ready.

A new bill could extend the length of time authorities must preserve sexual assault evidence

Nearly $13 million in proposed funding for domestic violence and sexual assault survivor services in Georgia is a step in the right direction.

With family violence incidents rising and shelters operating at capacity, this funding is critical. For many survivors, access to safe housing, counseling and legal advocacy can mean the difference between staying in danger and finding a path forward.

As federal relief dollars disappear, continued state support is essential to ensure survivors aren’t left without options.

A Central Georgia nonprofit said the proposed funding, which is nearly $13 million, arrives just as critical federal pandemic relief dollars are set to expire.

Sexual abuse in behavioral institutions is a systemic problem.

When patients are isolated, medicated and dependent on staff for basic care, the power imbalance is undeniable and dangerous. Add in ignored complaints, weak oversight and poor reporting systems, and you have an environment where abuse can thrive in silence.

This kind of abuse is underreported and preventable. But real change only happens when institutions, not just individuals, are held accountable.

Explore the realities of sexual abuse in behavioral institutions and the profound impact on vulnerable patients seeking care.

Last week, Mel Hewitt stood alongside fellow victims' rights advocates to recognize Henry County Sheriff Reginald Scandrett for his unwavering commitment to victims’ rights. His leadership goes beyond law enforcement as he builds trust, ensures victims' dignity and makes sure victims are seen, heard and supported every step of the way.

At a recent event hosted by Marsy's Law for Georgia, Mel Hewitt had the privilege of helping present the 2026 Champion Award to Keir Chapple, Director of the Georgia Office of Victim Services.

This recognition highlights Chapple, who goes beyond the courtroom, ensuring victims are heard, supported and protected at every stage, including post-conviction.

“Victims’ rights are not an ‘extra’ part of the legal process; they are the heart of it,” said Keir Chapple. “It is my job to ensure that every victim is heard, protected and restored at every stage of the post-conviction process."

Marsy’s Law for Georgia has recognized Keir Chapple, Georgia Office of Victim Services Director, with the first Champion Award of 2026.
