IMPORTANT IMMIGRATION UPDATE: Work Permit Renewal Rules
If you have a U.S. work permit (EAD), a recent federal rule change could affect your renewal planning.
Effective October 14, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule ending automatic extensions for certain employment authorization documents filed after October 30, 2025. The rule applies to individuals in affected immigration categories—including many green card applicants with pending adjustment-of-status cases, asylum applicants, refugees, certain TPS beneficiaries, and certain H-4 spouses—who file to renew their EADs. These applicants generally will not receive an automatic extension of their work authorization while the renewal is pending, unless a specific legal exception or applicable government notice provides otherwise.
What does this mean for you?
✅ Don't assume filing a renewal automatically extends your work authorization.
✅ Check your EAD expiration date and the rules that apply to your specific immigration category.
✅ Plan ahead to help avoid potential gaps in employment authorization.
Every immigration case is different. Exceptions may apply, including certain extensions authorized by law or specific government notices.
