We take incarcerated students sailing and they are the best sailing students we have. Natural sailors...remarkably good at it and up for the adventure. These are teenagers who have never been on the water before, who live in a gang infested neighborhood of five blocks of concrete where you don't leave your territory without risking all. And, from the first time on the boat, almost all of them are not only up for it...but good at it. We once asked one of the students why they were so immediately capable of doing so well-he looked around, grinned, and sail, "A boat's crew...it's a good gang isn't it?" He had it...working as a team, with a leader, in a dangerous environment where you coming through means all come through...and in a place of adventure and beauty. Makes sense...
