The seeks a skilled civil litigator to join our Office of General Counsel (OGC) as Assistant General Counsel — representing the State Bar in state and federal courts and advising across a broad range of legal matters.

This is in-house public agency work at its most substantive. OGC handles civil litigation, labor and employment, public records, open meetings, contracts, real estate, regulatory matters, and more. You'll also conduct "second-look" reviews of closed disciplinary complaints — work that directly serves the State Bar's public protection mission.

The ideal candidate brings:
→ 4+ years of strong civil litigation experience in state and federal courts, including appeals
→ Public agency experience — CPRA, Political Reform Act, Bagley-Keene, Government Claims Act
→ The ability to manage a complex, multi-matter caseload independently
→ Clear, solution-oriented legal communication and a collaborative approach

This position is open at the Attorney III or Attorney IV level depending on experience.

Attorney III: $142,925 – $214,221 | Attorney IV: $157,218 – $235,643

This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of research, writing, and public service. You'll field real questions from attorneys navigating complex issues — conflicts of interest, confidentiality, unauthorized practice of law — and help shape the guidance resources attorneys across California rely on.

What you'll do:
→ Staff the Ethics Hotline, providing research assistance to attorneys on professional responsibility issues
→ Draft legal memos, advisory opinions, and educational materials
→ Analyze legislation, case law, and ethics authorities
→ Support the Lawyer Referral Service program and key ethics committees

What we're looking for:
→ 3+ years of professional experience in research, analysis, or legal environments
→ Strong writing skills and effective communication
