This transaction was special. In May of 2013, Sebastian Serrano walked into my office. I offered to speak in Spanish, but he insisted on practicing his English. He described his vision for building a crypto platform that would democratize access to financial services across Latin America. Eight years later, Sebastian’s English is practically perfect, and his vision is now carried out by hundreds of employees spanning multiple countries. It’s been a pleasure and an honor to accompany the team this far, and to represent Ripio in connection with this momentous Series B raise. We are pro bono outside counsel to an innovative non-profit, Mission Centaur (www.missioncentaur.org) whose aim is to put a telescope in orbit with the object of specifically viewing Proxima B. Proxima B, a planet in the "habitable zone" orbiting Centauri Proxima, has long been suspected but TODAY was confirmed (using mathematical proofs, not by direct observation). This project is deeply appealing to us for many reasons. As startup lawyers we love supporting the people whose nascent ideas grow into incredible discoveries, innovations and technologies. A generation ago space exploration required the resources of governments, and only recently have billionaires like Bezos and Musk begun to undertake these types of missions. Now, small groups of committed scientists, using the resources committed by ordinary citizens, can undertake space exploration and are on the cutting edge of scientific discovery. Wow! I can't tell you how excited I am by this discovery and this new model for space exploration, and we are proud to play a small part in supporting it.
