Our mission is to advance and protect the rights, dignity, and health of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Bay Area. We accomplish this through direct legal representation by one of our Staff attorneys, by careful placement of clients with one of our 500 volunteer Panel attorneys, and by connecting our clients to non-legal service providers to secure other vital resources. Every year, we help tho

usands of clients stay in their homes, gain access to healthcare, become legal citizens, improve their finances, and connect to other community services. By addressing their legal problems, ALRP seeks to improve our clients’ health and well-being.

🏳️‍🌈✨Pride & Planning✨🏳️‍🌈

Last Saturday, in partnership with Wilson Sonsini Community Impact (), we hosted a hands-on Legacy Planning Clinic for our LGBTQ+ community members. Under the guidance of ALRP Supervising Staff Attorney Emily Heinzen, Wilson Sonsini's volunteer attorneys spent the day working closely with 10 clients to prepare wills, powers of attorney, and advance health care directives. Thanks to our on-site notary volunteer, our clients were able to leave with finalized documents in hand—ensuring their wishes are honored and their loved ones are protected.

Last week, in partnership with Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), we hosted a hands-on Asylum Declaration Workshop at our office to enlist pro bono help in preparing asylum declarations for our clients. Twelve volunteers attended, and ALRP Immigration Attorney Rafael Benzecry presented on the basic elements of an asylum claim and the importance of an individual’s asylum declaration in supporting the claim. Attendees learned best practices for drafting declarations and then had the opportunity to apply those skills in real time through guided examples and discussion.

All 12 volunteers signed up to help and are now working to prepare declarations using an anonymized client interview, case file, and outline already completed by ALRP’s legal team. We are grateful to BALIF for their help organizing this event, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP for sponsoring dinner, and to the volunteers who are generously giving their time to help ensure our clients receive support in their time of need!

We are thrilled to announce that Kathleen R. Hartnett will receive the Bill Hirsh Award at our 43rd Annual Reception on October 22. Named for ALRP’s legendary executive director of 24 years, the award recognizes an individual who leads with courage, tenacity, and kindness, even in very tough times.

Kathleen, a partner in the San Francisco office of Cooley LLP, has an extraordinary, decades’ long record of advancing a broad range of social justice issues—including her recent advocacy at the Supreme Court on behalf of trans women and girls. Last Thursday, we gathered with a group of our supporters at Keker, Van Nest & Peters LLP to talk about our caseload so far this year and the challenges we are facing, and to celebrate the impact our donors and friends are helping make possible. Staff Attorney Hunter Wolff spoke about a case demonstrating the impact of new draconian federal policies, and Social Worker Cassie Walter discussed helping a client with significant mental health challenges.

This year, the number of eviction filings in San Francisco has increased by more than 1,000 over last year. EDC's team of housing attorneys and our Tenant Right to Counsel partners are working overtime to protect San Franciscans from losing their housing, but the system is over capacity.
