Twenty years ago, the idea of a legal career built around flexibility instead of billable hours felt like a gamble.

As Paragon Legal marks 20 years, we’re sharing a special edition of our 20 Faces of Paragon series featuring the person who started it all: our Founder, Mae O’Malley.

In 2006, Mae was working part-time at Google while building Paragon on the side, one project at a time. She'd just welcomed her third child, Matteo, and was looking for a way to practice law that didn't force her to choose between meaningful work and raising a family.

In her video, Mae reflects on the crossroad that defined Paragon's early days: Google offered her a salaried role, and she had to decide whether to take it or bet fully on the company she'd started at her kitchen counter. She ran the numbers and chose herself. She also tells the story of Paragon's very first placement, an attorney named Fred, found through a chance connection at a local moms' club, who she still keeps in touch with today.

She shares why she never set out to build a company. She just wanted to help one more attorney find the same flexibility she had, and trusted that doing right by people would be enough.

Because Paragon wasn't built on a business plan. It was built on the belief that good people, given the right opportunity, will do good work.

Thank you, New York! 🍎

What an incredible time at the 5th Annual General Counsel Summit US hosted by Economist Enterprise – Events. Our team had the privilege of connecting with several general counsel, legal ops leaders, and legal leaders from some of the world's leading organizations and the conversations did not disappoint.

A few themes stood out to us:

🔹 The GC role is increasingly strategic. General counsel are guiding business decisions across regulatory change, geopolitical uncertainty, and operational risk, while protecting the capacity their teams need for the work itself.

🔹 DOJ and SEC developments remain a practical priority. As enforcement priorities evolve and shareholder activism continues, in-house teams are assessing where they need deeper compliance, corporate, employment, and regulatory experience.

🔹 Tariffs, immigration, and supply-chain shifts are creating new legal workstreams. These issues can affect commercial agreements, workforce planning, cross-functional decision-making, and risk management, often at the same time.

🔹 Capacity planning needs to account for both expected and unexpected demand. From regulatory response and contract volume to leave coverage and time-bound initiatives, legal departments benefit from a deliberate resourcing strategy that matches the right resource to the right work.

🔹 Legal operations helps make that strategy workable. Clear processes and flexible legal talent can help teams maintain continuity, manage specialized work, and keep their permanent staff focused on the highest-priority decisions.
