Thrilled to share this news – I recently won a motion to suppress evidence in a rare ruling that led to dismissal of the Federal case.

In this case, the police stopped an African American man driving a Mercedes in SF's Bayview neighborhood. They searched his car without reasonable suspicion that he was committing a crime and although they found a gun, we raised his Fourth Amendment right that protects him from unreasonable searches and seizures.

I'm incredibly proud of this win, and will continue to defend my clients against unlawful searches by the police.

More on the case:

The defendant was facing 10 years in federal prison, but a judge ruled the police search violated his Fourth Amendment rights.

With the passing of Jeff Adachi, we've lost a true visionary and extraordinary trial attorney. Those of us in private practice considered ourselves fortunate to practice alongside Mr. Adachi and his office of dedicated public defenders. He thought big and fought with vigor for our clients. I found myself constantly inspired by his drive to stand against racism and discrimination for all – not just the criminally accused.

Mr. Adachi developed one of the most culturally and gender diverse Public Defender Offices in the country. His work transformed how San Francisco saw its public defender. We've all benefited from his advocacy, and we feel a terrible loss with his absence.

Our hearts go out to Mr. Adachi's family, friends, and the attorneys and staff of the San Francisco Public Defender's Office. Rest in peace.

After immense health issues, Ruth Bader Ginsberg is making a powerful comeback. In one of first oral arguments since her return to the Supreme Court, the Court unanimously ruled that the Constitution’s ban on excessive fines applies to states. This is a massive step towards greater protection of the people from the overreach of law enforcement. This HuffPost article is worth a read: https://bit.ly/2BIDdCI

California took a similar step back in 2017, when it moved to protect its citizens' due process rights with Senate Bill 443. Today's Supreme Court ruling shows a strong alliance in protecting citizens from unlawful seizures by law enforcement. In short: this is progress we're proud to see.

The ruling could help efforts to rein in police seizure of property from criminal suspects.
