One of the most common questions we receive is why DUI checkpoints are announced in advance.

The answer is simple: California law requires it. Under Ingersoll v. Palmer (1987), advance publicity is one of the guidelines law enforcement must follow when conducting a DUI checkpoint. The goal is to deter impaired driving through awareness, not to surprise drivers.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. The checkpoint will take place in the City of San Carlos along El Camino Real.

DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on statistics showing where alcohol or drug related crashes occur most frequently. The purpose of a DUI checkpoint is to promote public safety and increase awareness of the dangers associated with driving while intoxicated and to serve as a deterrent to potential impaired drivers.

Never drive under the influence. If you plan to drink, make arrangements ahead of time such as using a rideshare service, taxi or a designated driver. One good decision can prevent a lifetime of consequences.

This checkpoint is made possible through funding provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety.

This holiday weekend, our officers focused on one simple goal: saving lives through seat belt safety.

During the Holiday Enforcement Period, CHP officers issued 2,172 seat belt citations to drivers and passengers who chose not to buckle up. While citations are never the goal, every stop was an opportunity to prevent a tragedy.

Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones on the road. No matter how short the trip is, buckle up every time.
