We have lost a true visionary with the passing of Jeff Adachi. The Criminal Trial Lawyers Association of Northern California pays tribute to his tireless advocacy on behalf of San Francisco’s most vulnerable. Mr. Adachi was not only an extraordinary trial attorney, he also saw the big picture and devoted himself to criminal justice reform.
Those of us in private practice considered ourselves fortunate to practice alongside Mr. Adachi and his office of dedicated public defenders. We were inspired by his example to fight with vigor for our clients and to think big. Mr. Adachi fought against racism and discrimination for all people, not just those criminally accused. He followed the leadership of his predecessors in developing one of the most culturally and gender diverse Public Defender Offices in the country. He transformed how San Francisco saw its public defender and by doing so, elevated the public’s perception of the criminal defense bar. We all benefited from Mr. Adachi’s advocacy and feel a terrible loss with his passing.
Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to Mr. Adachi’s family, friends, and the attorneys and staff of the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office.
