Did you know children are more than twice as likely to be struck by a vehicle on Halloween than on any other evening? 🎃🚶‍♂️
As a child injury attorney, my favorite cases are the ones that never happen. Before heading out to trick-or-treat this year, here are 3 non-negotiable safety checks:
🔦 Be visible from 360°: A single glow stick isn’t enough. Add reflective tape to costume backs and treat buckets, or clip battery-powered lights to jackets.
🎭 Trade masks for face paint: Rigid plastic masks destroy peripheral vision and depth perception, making it easy for kids to miss curb edges or step into traffic.
🚗 Watch the driveways: Crosswalks aren’t the only hazard. Delivery vans, rideshares, and partygoers backing out of dark driveways pose an enormous risk to kids darting across lawns.

Children heat up 3 to 5 times faster than adults, making extreme heat dangerous in a matter of minutes. As temps soar across SoCal, here’s how to keep your little ones safe:
💧 Hydrate early & often: Offer extra formula/breast milk for babies under 6 months, and keep water bottles handy for older kids before they even ask.
🚫 Skip the blanket stroller hack: Draping a blanket or towel over a stroller creates a dangerous greenhouse effect. Use clip-on fans, UV-mesh canopies, and stick to the shade.
⏰ Avoid peak sun: Keep outdoor play before 10 AM or after 4 PM. Opt for loose, lightweight layers, sun hats, and SPF 30+ (for 6+ months).
🚗 Look before you lock: A car’s interior can jump 20° in just 10 minutes. Leave a shoe, purse, or phone in the backseat so you never walk away without checking.
⚠️ Watch for warning signs: Unusual drowsiness, flushed skin, vomiting, or lethargy mean it’s time to head indoors immediately. If a child becomes unresponsive or confused, call 911.

Head injuries can happen in a split second whether on the field, at work, or from an everyday fall but the signs of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) aren’t always immediately obvious. 🧠

Knowing what to look for can make a massive difference in recovery.

Symptoms can range from mild concussions to severe injuries:

🔸 Physical: Persistent headaches, dizziness, nausea, or sensitivity to light.
🔸 Cognitive: Confusion, memory gaps, or feeling “foggy.”
🔸 Emotional: Unusual irritability, anxiety, or sudden mood shifts.

Never ignore a hit to the head. If symptoms worsen like repeated vomiting, slurred speech, or extreme drowsiness seek emergency medical care immediately. Stay safe and look out for your teammates and loved ones.

🚨 HEADS UP, PARENTS: As school sports return, so does the risk of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). We often think of CTE and long-term brain trauma as “NFL problems,” but recent research shows that repetitive hits to the head in youth sports carry serious long-term risks for developing brains.

3 Warning Signs Your Child’s Concussion May Be Unreported:

🧠 Sensitivity to noise or screen light
🧠 Unexplained irritability, anxiety, or mood shifts
🧠 Sudden difficulty keeping up with schoolwork

🏈 Sports should build our children up, not put their future at risk. Schools and leagues are required to maintain strict concussion protocols to keep kids safe.

Long before e-bike crashes made national news, the warning signs were everywhere. Kids weaving through traffic, running red lights, evading police 👮🏽 and putting themselves and others in serious danger.‼️ An e-bike is not a regular bicycle. At 20+ mph, it is a motorized vehicle sharing the road with multi-ton cars. If our kids don’t know basic traffic laws, we are setting them up for severe injuries and setting parents up for serious legal liability.
