First: find out exactly what was recorded. Then check for anything else pending and notify the appropriate authorities. In some cases, you may need a real estate attorney to help resolve the issue.

Could someone be renting out your property without you knowing? 🏠

Properties that sit vacant or aren’t visited often can be attractive targets for fraud. Someone may list the property for rent, collect deposits from multiple people, or create other problems before the real owner even realizes what’s happening.

Simple steps like regularly checking the property or setting up cameras and alerts where possible can help you notice unusual activity sooner.

Property fraud is still relatively rare — but when it happens, the financial consequences can be serious. Staying aware is one of the simplest ways to protect what you’ve worked for.

🔒 Freezing your credit doesn’t mean giving up access to it when you actually need it.

If a legitimate credit check comes up, you can temporarily “thaw” the freeze even for just one day and have it automatically freeze again afterward.

For something you may only need to access occasionally, keeping your credit frozen can add an extra layer of protection the rest of the time. And as discussed in the video, freezing and unfreezing your credit is free.

Have you frozen your credit yet?

One common reason people hesitate to freeze their credit? 🔒🤔 They’re worried it could hurt their credit score.

It doesn’t.

A credit freeze simply restricts access to your credit file for new credit applications until you choose to unfreeze it. Your existing credit continues to work as usual.

And if you also sign up for property recording alerts, you’re adding another opportunity to catch suspicious activity early.

These tools can’t prevent someone from attempting fraud but they can give you valuable time to react before more damage is done.

Paying for “title fraud protection” doesn’t automatically mean your home is fully protected 🏠🔒

Some services primarily monitor public records and alert you when something changes. Others may offer additional coverage or assistance if fraud actually occurs and that distinction matters.

Before paying for any service, look closely at exactly what’s included, what happens if fraud is detected, and whether you’re paying for monitoring you may already be able to get through your county.

The key: know what you’re actually buying before assuming you’re protected.

🏠 A property alert won’t stop title fraud but it can help you catch suspicious activity before the situation gets much harder to untangle.

County recorder alerts can notify homeowners when a document is recorded against their property, giving them a chance to investigate quickly if something doesn’t look right.

It’s a simple layer of protection worth knowing about — especially as these alert systems expand across California.

Have you checked whether your county offers property recording alerts yet?

“Sign here to get your winnings.” 🎟️

In some title fraud schemes, a homeowner may believe they’re signing one document when they’re actually signing a deed transferring title to their home.

Older adults, especially those experiencing cognitive decline, can be particularly vulnerable to this type of deception. 🏠

Would you know what you were signing before putting your name on the page?

One free step can make it harder for someone to take out a loan in your name đź”’

Freezing your credit with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion can help prevent someone from opening new credit using your identity including attempts to access your home equity.

It’s free to freeze, free to unfreeze, and stays in place until you remove it 🏠

Is your credit currently frozen?

24 false liens. More than $98 million recorded against properties. 🏠

In a Los Angeles County case discussed in the video, a woman was charged with filing false mechanic’s liens against properties.

The problem may not surface until years later, when an owner tries to sell and discovers a lien they never knew existed. ⚠️

Would you know if a fraudulent lien had been recorded against your property?
