Affordable Housing Advocates AHA provides legal services to tenants, in San Diego County, to enforce and expand their rights.

AHA is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3), corporation and a Qualified Legal Services Project funded in part by the California State Bar Office of Access and Inclusion. During the pandemic, we continue to provide necessary legal services to tenants remotely. June 25, 2026 is the 35th Anniversary of our incorporation. In the beginning, as San Diego Friends of Legal Aid, we helped support special projects at Legal Aid Society of San Diego, including the Adopt-A-Building Project. Adopt-A-Building worked with tenants and communities to keep federally subsidized housing, at risk of converting to market rate, affordable. Today we are helping tenants in Coronado keep housing assisted by the City's former redevelopment agency affordable. Section 8 provides critical support to enable families to afford housing. As families' incomes rise, the level of support is reduced. Do you think deadlines should be imposed to force families off the program, regardless of whether they can afford market rate rents on their own?

The rule would allow housing agencies and landlords to impose such requirements "to encourage self-sufficiency." Critics say most who can work already do, but their wages are low.
