On Monday night, Eddie Meyer, ACLU-SDIC senior policy advocate, gave public comment at the San Diego County budget hearing.

One of the ACLU-SDIC's top priorities is robust funding for the Immigrant Legal Defense Program (ILDP). Demand for immigration legal services continues to rise as more residents face detention and deportation. The ILDP ensures immigrants in detention have access to legal representation.

Members of the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties team joined a celebration of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month with Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee.

The event featured cultural dances from the Philippines, Hawaii and China. In addition, we heard from speakers from Filipino communities in Niland and a special presentation by Mary Jane Galviso, who shared her history in the Filipino farm worker movement and of Filipino farms in the northend of the county before the 1970s.

Thank you to the Imperial Valley Social Justice Committee for a wonderful event!

“People in Imperial County have historically faced a mix of structural, language, economic and political barriers to voting. Among other factors, this has made people feel their voices don’t matter and led to some of the lowest voter participation rates in the state,” writes Daniela Vega, senior organizer at the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties.

But, she says, “Now is the time to act. Cast your vote and encourage your friends, family and all eligible voters to turn out.”
