In sexual abuse litigation, the question is not always limited to who committed the abuse.

There may be another story behind it.

What did the institution know? Were there earlier complaints? Did someone raise concerns that were dismissed? Was an employee or volunteer allowed continued access to children despite warning signs?

These questions can reveal failures that extend far beyond the actions of one individual.

The Zalkin Law Firm has spent decades investigating sexual abuse cases involving schools, religious organizations, healthcare providers, youth organizations, and other institutions. We look beyond the immediate circumstances to determine who had the power to prevent the abuse and whether they failed to act.

Sexual abuse can affect an entire family, not only the person who directly experienced it.

Parents may take time away from work to care for a child. Spouses may experience changes in companionship and intimacy. Families may face the costs of therapy, medical treatment, or other support during recovery.

In some circumstances, the law may recognize these secondary harms. Depending on state law and the facts involved, certain family members may have claims related to financial losses, loss of consortium, emotional distress, or other consequences of the abuse.

The survivor’s claim remains central, but understanding the full impact of abuse can be an important part of pursuing accountability.

Calling a law firm should not feel like surrendering control of your story.

For survivors of sexual abuse, that distinction matters.

Speaking with an attorney does not mean you have committed to filing a lawsuit. It does not mean you have to make every decision immediately. And it does not mean someone else suddenly gets to decide what justice should look like for you.

At The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP, we believe survivors should understand their options and remain at the center of the decisions that follow.

That may mean discussing accountability. Privacy. Compensation. The legal process. Concerns about family or an institution. Or simply asking questions that have gone unanswered for years.

We can explain what the law may allow.

The decision about what comes next remains yours. https://bit.ly/3J29Zod

As students head back to college campuses, there is one lesson that should never be complicated:

No means no.

A date is not consent. A relationship is not consent. Going to a party, drinking alcohol, flirting, or agreeing to one form of intimacy does not give someone permission to ignore a boundary.

Campus sexual assault can happen in dorms, fraternity houses, parties, bars, and other places students gather. And when a student reports sexual misconduct, schools have responsibilities under Title IX to respond and provide protections and support.

At The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP, we have represented survivors at colleges and universities across the country. As another school year begins, the message should be unmistakable: when someone says no, respect it. https://bit.ly/48fDnjh

For survivors of childhood sexual abuse, pursuing accountability can be deeply personal. The people you trust with your story matter.

At The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP, we have spent decades representing survivors with an understanding that no two experiences, and no two paths forward, are the same. We take the time to listen, protect our clients' confidentiality, and approach each case with the sensitivity this work demands.

We are proud when former clients recognize not only the dedication we brought to their case, but the compassion, integrity, and understanding they experienced along the way.

Seeking justice is about more than a legal outcome. For many survivors, it can also be one part of reclaiming their voice and holding those responsible accountable. https://bit.ly/3L2BgaG

One of the most important questions in a sexual abuse case is often not simply, "Who committed the abuse?"

It is: "Who had the power to stop it?"

Schools, churches, universities, youth organizations, healthcare providers, and other institutions are entrusted with people's safety. When warning signs are ignored, reports are buried, supervision fails, or an accused individual is quietly moved somewhere else, the story may be much bigger than one perpetrator.

That is why our work at The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP often requires looking beyond the individual act of abuse.

We investigate what an institution knew. When it knew it. What policies existed. Whether complaints had been made before. And what the organization did when it had an opportunity to protect someone.

Powerful institutions may have substantial resources devoted to protecting themselves.

We devote ours to uncovering the truth. https://bit.ly/3J29Zod

For survivors of clergy sexual abuse, pursuing justice can mean confronting not only an abuser, but an institution that may have had decades to protect itself.

That is why experience in these cases matters.

At The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP, we help survivors understand what a civil claim could involve, who may be held responsible, what evidence can help uncover institutional failures, and how the legal process differs from a criminal investigation or an internal church proceeding.

Just as importantly, we understand that survivors should not have to surrender control to pursue accountability. We prepare clients for each step, move at a pace that respects their needs, and work to make an unfamiliar legal process more predictable and less overwhelming.

For decades, our work has centered on sexual abuse cases and holding powerful institutions accountable. Survivors deserve advocates who understand both sides of that responsibility. https://bit.ly/3WX5bn6

Accountability does not stop with the individual who committed the abuse.

The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP secured a $10.5 million result in a multi-victim clergy sexual abuse case involving a religious group home.

Cases involving multiple survivors can expose failures that extend beyond a single act or individual. They can raise difficult questions about what an institution knew, what it failed to do, and how people entrusted with the safety of others were allowed to cause harm.

For decades, our firm has represented survivors of sexual abuse and taken on powerful religious institutions and organizations. We pursue these cases with sensitivity toward the people who come forward and an unwavering commitment to holding those responsible accountable.

This result reflects the courage of the survivors who stepped forward and trusted us with their stories.

$10,500,000 recovered. Accountability pursued. Survivors heard. https://bit.ly/4o7rByc

FAQ: Is it too late to pursue a New York Child Victims Act claim if the abuse happened decades ago?

Not necessarily. New York’s Child Victims Act was created in recognition of a reality we have seen throughout our work with survivors: childhood sexual abuse may take years, or even decades, to process and disclose.

For many survivors, coming forward is not a single decision. It can be a deeply personal process shaped by trauma, fear, shame, family dynamics, or concerns about what pursuing accountability might involve.

The Child Victims Act expanded opportunities for survivors to pursue civil claims that may previously have been barred by time limits. Whether a claim is still possible depends on the specific circumstances.

At The Zalkin Law Firm, LLP, we believe survivors should be able to learn about their legal options without being pressured into a decision. Sometimes, a private and confidential conversation is simply the first step toward understanding what choices may still be available.

Your timeline for coming forward does not diminish what happened to you. https://bit.ly/46BRAHc
