Today is World Letter Writing Day.

While handwritten letters on paper may feel like a lost art, modern co-parents actually write to each other more than ever - it just happens through text messages, emails, and co-parenting apps ((like OurFamilyWizard or TalkingParents)) instead of envelopes.

When dynamic relationships transition, the way we communicate matters more than ever. Written words can either build bridges or create friction.

Here are 3 golden rules for co-parenting communication:
- Keep it BIFF: Keep messages Brief, Informative, Firm, and Friendly (or neutral).
- Stick strictly to the logistics of the kids.
- Write for the Reader (and the Court): A good rule of thumb? Never send a text or email you wouldn't be comfortable with a judge reading out loud.
- Pause Before Hitting Send: Take a 15-minute breather before responding to an emotional message. Draft it, review it, then send.

Thankfully, California updated the law to reflect how much our pets mean to us!

Under California Family Code §2605, judges have the authority to assign sole or joint ownership of a pet based on the care and well-being of the animal.
- What does the court look at when determining "care"?
- Who handles primary feeding, walking, and daily routines?
- Whose name is on the vet records, microchip, and license?
- Who pays for food, medical bills, and grooming?
- The overall safety and protected shelter of the animal.
