📚 What is IDEA? 💙

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act — the federal law that protects your child’s right to a free, appropriate public education.

In simple terms: IDEA guarantees that eligible children with disabilities receive FAPE (Free Appropriate Public Education) and the special education and related services they need to thrive. ✅

This is the foundation of everything we talk about — IEPs, evaluations, services, accommodations. It all starts here. 🧩

⚖️ As a special education attorney — this is my #1 recommendation when parent ask me how to become an advocate. Take the COPAA training.

COPAA (Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates) built this course specifically for parents who want to advocate. And I’ve seen firsthand what a difference it makes.

Parents who walk into IEP meetings informed get better outcomes. It’s that simple.

You’ll learn:
✅ Rights under IDEA
✅ How to navigate IEP meetings with confidence
✅ When something’s wrong — and what to do about it
✅ How to run a business
✅When it’s time to call an attorney

🚨 Parents — did you know this? 🚨

If your child’s school did a records review only for their triennial evaluation — no new testing, no direct assessment — you have the legal right to request an Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) at public expense.

Under IDEA, when a district conducts an evaluation that you disagree with (including one that’s just a paper review), you can ask for an IEE done by a qualified evaluator outside the school district.

Don’t let a records review be the final word on your child’s needs. 📋➡️📊

Accommodations and Modifications are NOT the same thing, and the difference really matters in AP classes 💡

Accommodations → level the playing field without changing the bar.
Modifications → change what’s expected.

For IEP students in AP, the goal is usually to keep the rigor while removing the barrier. But that requires a team that actually understands the difference.

Do you know what inclusion really means for your child’s IEP?👇

Inclusion isn’t just about physical placement — it’s about participation. It means your child is actively engaged, learning, and contributing alongside their peers, not just sitting in the same room. LRE — Least Restrictive Environment — means your child has a legal right to be educated alongside their peers with the right supports in place. Watch this to understand what that looks like in a real classroom — REMEMBER to advocate for it at your next IEP meeting. 💪

Did you know a student’s behavior can impact their placement? 😮

But schools have to follow a 4-part legal test, commonly referred as the Rachel H. test before making that call.

Save this for your next IEP meeting! 📌

PSA: i-Ready is not peer-reviewed. That means its claims about student learning and growth have never been independently verified by outside researchers.

Schools are making major instructional decisions based on this — and parents deserve to know. 👀

Share this with every parent you know. The more people who ask questions, the harder it is to ignore.

Your child has rights. But you need the receipts to prove it. 🗂️

Watch this before you consider filing for due process.
