Nobody tells families this part.

A nursing home resident develops a stage 4 bedsore.

They get transferred to the hospital.

The facility documents it as a "hospitalization."

What they don't document: The wound that was there for weeks before anyone told you.

The repositioning logs that were never filled in.

The assessment that was skipped on a short-staffed Sunday.

The bedsore didn't end at discharge.

It started a clock. Sepsis, surgery, sometimes death.

And the facility moved on to the next resident.

This is not a worst-case scenario.

This is a pattern.

"They're short-staffed. What can you do?"

A lot, actually.

Understaffing isn't a force of nature.

Nursing homes choose their staffing levels.

They set the schedules.

They decide how many aides are responsible for how many residents on a given shift.

When they choose to run lean, and a resident develops a Stage 4 pressure wound because no one had time to reposition her every two hours, that choice has legal consequences.

Federal regulations require facilities to have "sufficient staff" to meet each resident's needs.

That's not a suggestion.

It's a condition of participation in Medicare and Medicaid.

"We didn't have enough people" is not a defense.

It's an admission.

If you've heard this explanation after a loved one was harmed in a nursing home, write it down. Who said it. When. The exact words.

Because what sounds like an apology is often the most important thing you'll hear.
