NEW CALIFORNIA LAW - SMALL BUSINESS ALERT!!
Paid Sick Leave:

California will be the second state in the U.S. to mandate paid sick leave for many employees. The “Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014”, goes into effect July 1, 2015, and requires California employers to provide at least three days of paid sick leave each year. YOU'RE FIRED!

Whether you are a small or large business, it pays to follow some simple steps when executing employment terminations.

Of course, besides reviewing the termination with your friendly employment lawyer, here is a quick checklist of some things to keep in mind and an article on the topic:

1. Give notice to the employee that it is an action for termination.

2. List reasons for the action ("be specific, but not too specific").

3. List prior warnings: Give dates and subject matter.

4. Tell employee of the benefits that he is entitled to.

5. Tell employee whether there was a review of the decision.

6. Be specific about the date of the worker's last day.

7. Mention the exit interview: Give time, place, and date.

Tip sheet of the day: The dos and don'ts of firing people.
