National Preparedness Month | September

Wildfires and other disasters can happen quickly. Taking a few minutes now to organize important documents can make recovery easier if an emergency affects your home or family.

Start by creating a secure digital file with photos or copies of your lease or rental agreement, identification, insurance policy, important contacts, proof of payments, and photos of your home and belongings. Store the file somewhere you can access even if you have to leave home unexpectedly.

If a disaster occurs, keep copies of FEMA applications, insurance communications, receipts, repair estimates, and notices from your landlord. These records may become important if you need to appeal a decision, document a loss, or address a housing issue.

Preparation isn’t only about emergency supplies. It’s also about protecting the information you may need to rebuild and move forward.

Wildfires can move quickly. Your plan shouldn’t have to.

Before an emergency, take a few simple steps to help protect yourself and the people you care about:
Know how you’ll receive local emergency alerts.

Make an evacuation plan with your household.

Plan more than one way out in case roads are closed.

Keep a Go Bag ready with important documents, medications, phones, and other essentials.

Think ahead about children, older adults, people with disabilities or medical needs, and pets who may need extra time to evacuate.

Most importantly, know the difference between an evacuation warning and an evacuation order. A warning means it’s time to get ready—and people who need extra time should consider leaving. An evacuation order means leave immediately.

Don’t wait until you see smoke to start planning.

Wildfire Preparedness Starts Before You See Smoke

Living in Southern California means wildfire preparedness should be part of our routine—not something we think about only when an emergency begins.
Take a few minutes today to make sure your household is ready. Know your evacuation zone, sign up for local emergency alerts, and talk with your family about where you would go and how you would reconnect if you became separated.

Keep a Go Bag ready with essentials such as identification, medications, important documents, chargers, and personal necessities. It’s also a good idea to have enough food, water, and basic supplies at home for at least three days.

And remember: preparedness includes looking out for others. Check on older adults, neighbors with disabilities, and anyone who may need additional time or assistance during an evacuation.

A plan made today can eliminate critical decisions during an emergency.

Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino was proud to participate in the Empowerment & Action Fair, bringing onsite legal services directly to our community.

Our team and volunteer attorneys met one-on-one with participants to provide legal advice, document preparation, and assistance with expungement and record-clearing matters—helping remove legal barriers that can stand in the way of housing, employment, and a new beginning.
A special thank you to our amazing volunteer attorneys and Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino staff for giving their time and expertise to serve our community.

Make a family evacuation plan, keep phones and backup batteries charged, and prepare a Go Bag with important documents, medications, keys, chargers, and other essentials. Got a Rent Increase Notice? Check It Before You Pay More.

Late summer often brings lease renewals and rent increase notices. If you rent in San Bernardino or Riverside County, knowing the rules can help you understand whether an increase is allowed.

For many rental homes and apartments covered by California's Tenant Protection Act (AB 1482), a landlord cannot raise the rent over a 12-month period by more than 5% plus the regional change in the cost of living, or 10% — whichever is lower.

A rent increase must be in writing, with advance notice — generally at least 30 days for an increase of 10% or less, and 90 days for an increase above 10%.

Not every rental is covered. Some properties are exempt — for example, certain single-family homes and condos, and some newer construction — and local rules may add further protections depending on where you live.

If you received a rent increase notice and have questions, don't guess. Get reliable information about your rights.
