Not every truck running through the Permian Basin is a big interstate rig that has to hold onto six months of driver logs. Texas exempts purely intrastate commercial trucks under 26,001 pounds from that same record-keeping mandate. A lot of oilfield service trucks weigh in under that number, which can mean the company running it has no legal duty to save anything at all.
The onboard computer and dashcam run on a different clock. No six-month cushion there. Depending on the system, that footage and engine data can loop over anywhere from a few hours of continued driving to several weeks, and nothing forces the carrier to freeze it first.
What actually protects it is plain paperwork: a letter to the carrier naming the black box and dashcam, demanding both stay untouched until an expert can image them.
