Attended the Community Violence Reduction Initiative meeting on July 31 at Chemeketa Community College. This meeting was held in Spanish and Chief Womack addressed the audience in Spanish. This is an important conversation about public safety and reducing gun violence in our community.

The next meeting will be at Salem Alliance on August 22. If you live in Salem, Marion County, Oregon, there is room for you at the table.

On Thursday, I finalized the paperwork on my last privately mediated divorce for 2023. I was honored to work with a couple willing to set aside their differences despite the breakdown of their marriage. We had three joint session that went a little longer than usual. They found terms that address what both needed to move forward and we memorialized it in writing.

The documents were signed and filed by the end of business on Thursday. I was surprised and pleased the court granted the dissolution the next day. When minor children are involved, it often takes a bit longer. I presume the court reviewed the parenting plan, support calculator, and judgment and it appears they waived the parenting class and mediation orientation requirements. It is obvious this former couple moved forward with their situation with the least amount of conflict as possible, they are not the people who need to sit through a few hours of parenting classes (they are exemplary parents) or be convinced to attempt mediation.

The credit goes to this former couple. I only guided them through the negotiation process, drafted the joint petition, the general judgment per their agreement, and the supporting documents. They made all the hard decisions.

Although it is an end to their marriage, it is a new and happy beginning for the family. Best wishes to both and their children.

In 2024, I will be focusing my efforts in other areas of law; primarily criminal law, civil arbitration, and as a Judge pro tempore for the City of Salem. As much as I love helping people resolve disputes in mediation, I enjoy being in the courtroom more.

I will still help people in dissolutions, but by referrals, only.
