Long before dawn, Texas construction workers head off to another day of grueling labor under the blistering sun. Elsewhere, ICE is on the move in a fleet of shiny unmarked SUVs. Texas and its construction workers are ground zero for President Donald Trump's deportation efforts. Of every 10 construction workers in Texas, four are foreign-born, most of whom are Hispanic and undocumented. "In Texas, you go deer hunting early in the morning," said Jacob Monty, an immigration attorney. "That's what they are doing. They are hunting for construction workers, early in the morning, like you would an animal."

"A system that wrongly flags citizens, and a process that can enroll noncitizens without their knowledge, are both reasons to insist on careful, individualized verification and fair notice rather than sweeping action on imperfect data. For noncitizens, the safest course is simple: decline voter registration at the DMV, read every prompt before signing, refrain from registering or voting, and consult an immigration attorney before responding to any registration notice. For everyone else, the lesson is that accuracy and due process do not obstruct election integrity — they are what make it real."

Alex Nilaj, a longtime leader of the Open Hand food pantry in New York City, was taken into Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody last week after being detained during an immigration hearing. The Department of Homeland Security described Nilaj as an undocumented immigrant from Albania who entered the United States 20 years ago and overstayed. Nilaj is not accused of any offense other than the immigration violation. He is being held at Delaney Hall Detention Center in New Jersey. Rep. Richie Torres knows Nilaj and said, "Every elected official in the Bronx knows Alex. Every civic association knows Alex. Every member of the local community board knows Alex. He's no stranger. He's one of us. Delaney has about a thousand inmates. None of them are serious offenders or violent offenders. None of them. As far as I'm concerned, Delaney Hall should not even exist."

The DHS described Alex Nilaj as an undocumented immigrant from Albania who entered the United States 20 years ago and overstayed.

A divided three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit held Tuesday that a coalition of Christian and Jewish groups have grounds to sue over a Trump administration policy that allows more federal immigration enforcement activities in houses of worship. Judge Florence Pan said that the religious organizations have shown that their members face a "credible threat" of immigration enforcement near houses of worship as a result of the change. She also noted that immigration enforcement operations have already begun at or near religious congregations as a "direct result" of the change.

A Washington federal appeals court revived an effort by religious organizations to challenge a Trump administration policy that allows more federal immigration enforcement activities in houses of worship.

Legal experts say that a $10 million contract between ICE and a third-party data broker may have given ICE taxpayer information that a federal court previously ruled they should not have access to. This past June, ICE awarded a contract to ThunderCat Technology to access "ITIN [individual taxpayer identification numbers] data", which immigrants without legal status use to pay taxes. The subscription potentially exposes millions of immigrants to ICE's enforcement dragnet. "Our concern is that the new contract is a way that ICE is getting around the injunction, undermining its validity," said Josh Rosenthal, workers' rights program director at Asian Law Caucus.

According to the American Immigration Council, ICE’s use of the data broker ThunderCat Technology marks a sharp break from longstanding taxpayer privacy protections, despite a federal court order restricting data sharing between ICE and the IRS.
