Daylight San Diego reports that the San Diego Immigration Court increased the number of cases heard per judge per day, joining other jurisdictions in holding “mega” master calendar hearings with large dockets and rescheduled hearing dates. Last Friday, June 12, out of more than 80 respondents scheduled before one judge, fewer than half appeared, and the court ultimately ordered about 50 individuals removed in absentia, including 49 in a group hearing.

There was a time not long ago when U.S. immigration officials would have rolled out the red carpet for Cuban immigrants, especially those who fled the island's political regime. But as of April of this year, nearly 8,000 Cubans have been expelled during the second Trump administration, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement figures. That is more than double the 3,385 who were ousted under the first Trump administration. Most have been deported and left on the Mexican side of the border. Many are older people with serious health conditions who have been living in the United States for years, according to Human Rights Watch. In the case of nearly 2,000 who have been repatriated to Cuba in the past 17 months, they are returning to a country with a failing economy asphyxiated by a U.S. naval blockade and the threat of a U.S. invasion.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has issued an ultimatum to hundreds of immigrant families in the state. If parents keep their disabled and critically ill children on last-resort medical programs, their personal information will be given to a state agency that shares data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This effort targets immigrant children without permanent legal status. There is no transition plan for young patients relying on the Children's Special Services Program which helps provide ventilators, feeding tubes, chemotherapy, and other vital health care. Public health officials are desperately trying to figure out how to provide ongoing care as parents are forced to make tough decisions. "We are not comfortable today. We have no other choice. We have to take him from Children's Special Services. Because I see in the news that they don't care. I see them taking a mother with a baby. I don't want to put the life of my children in their hands. I don't want immigration to come to my house. I don't want them to put us in detention. In detention (my son) wouldn't get any care," said one mother of a 10-year-old who will be affected.

On Friday, the Trump administration said that it would comply with a court order to restart processing asylum and other immigration applications filed by a broad variety of people who had been left in legal limbo for months. The move comes after a federal judge last week struck down policies imposed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a major blow to the administration's expanding efforts to restrict legal immigration. The policies included a global hold on asylum applications filed with the agency and a freeze on immigration applications filed by people from countries that are subject to President Trump's travel ban. In a court filing on Friday, Angelica Alfonso-Royals, the deputy director of USCIS, said the agency instructed employees to treat the policies "as if they are no longer in effect." USCIS also said in a memo posted on its website that it "strongly disagrees with the court's order" but that it would "follow its terms pending possible further judicial review."

The response came after a federal judge rebuked officials for failing to immediately comply with the order he issued last week.

A medical examiner has ruled the death of a Haitian asylum seeker to be a homicide, and a lawyer for her family said he expected the family to sue Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Daphy Michel, 31, was found deceased in a bus shelter in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 2. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office ruled that she was a vulnerable adult "suffering from untreated severe mental health issues and a significant language barrier" when she was released on February 27. ICE took her into custody at a county jail where she was being detained for shouting at imaginary people, her attorney, Joseph Patrick Murphy, said. ICE then put an ankle monitor on her and took her 25 miles to Pittsburgh where she sat in a bus shelter for several days in winter. "She was in September clothes and it was February, and the weather overwhelmed her and she went into hypothermia," Murphy said.

It's been six months since Claudia first applied to renew her DACA status — and she's still waiting. For the past 14 years, this process took only a few weeks for her, but now this prolonged delay has put her life on hold. Years of work invested in education and starting a career are now at risk because of the lapse in her work authorization. "It feels like a personal attack. I renewed on time, completed my biometrics, followed every rule, but I'm still waiting to hear back," said Claudia. The processing delays come at a time when DACA recipients like Claudia face growing hostility from the Trump administration. Hundreds of DACA recipients have been arrested by federal immigration enforcement and several have even been deported over the last year amid the White House's broader immigration crackdown.
