St. Pete is a city where people love to walk.

Downtown. Along the waterfront. Through our neighborhoods. To restaurants, shops, and community events.

But being in a pedestrian-friendly city doesn't mean every crossing is safe.
Drivers who fail to yield, have poor visibility, inadequate lighting, and confusing intersections can all contribute to pedestrian accidents.

And here's something many drivers may not realize: A pedestrian crossing doesn't always have to be marked with painted lines for right-of-way rules to apply.
Florida law includes protections for pedestrians at certain unmarked crosswalks, too.

Whether you're behind the wheel or crossing the street, knowing the rules matters.
I've represented accident victims in St. Petersburg for nearly 40 years. I know how quickly a moment of inattention can change someone's life.

A driver approaches an intersection, sees an opening in traffic, and makes a left turn.

But there's a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction.

It's a scenario that can have devastating consequences.

Motorcycles are smaller and can be more difficult for drivers to judge in traffic.

When a driver misjudges a rider's speed or fails to yield, the results can be serious.
Motorcycle accident cases also raise important questions about visibility, right-of-way, road conditions, and the actions of everyone involved.

After nearly four decades representing accident victims, I know how important it is to investigate the circumstances rather than make assumptions about who was responsible.

Before turning left, look twice. A motorcycle may be closer than you think.

One car hits another.

That vehicle is pushed into a third.

Maybe another driver becomes involved before anyone has time to react.

In a multi-vehicle accident, figuring out who is responsible isn't always obvious.

Which vehicle made the first impact? Was one car pushed into another? Did more than one driver's actions contribute? Was one of the drivers working at the time? Which insurance policies may apply?

These are the kinds of questions that can matter when reconstructing what actually happened.

It's also why I don't believe in making assumptions based solely on how an accident looks at first glance.

The sequence matters. The evidence matters. Experience matters.

When a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck collide, determining what happened may go well beyond looking at the two drivers.

Questions can involve the trucking company, vehicle maintenance, cargo loading, driving hours, driver logs, GPS information, electronic records and other evidence.
That's one reason truck accident cases can be particularly complex.

After nearly four decades practicing law, I've learned the importance of looking beyond what's immediately visible after a serious accident.

Sometimes the most important evidence isn't sitting in the middle of the road.

Today's vehicles do more than get us from Point A to Point B.

They can also contain valuable information about what happened in the moments leading to an accident.

Event data recorders—sometimes called a vehicle's "black box"—may capture information such as speed, braking and other vehicle activity. Depending on the accident, that data can become another piece of evidence used to understand what happened.

Technology has changed considerably during my nearly four decades practicing law. And it has changed the way accident cases can be investigated, too.

Experience matters. So does knowing how to use the tools available today.

Nearly 40 years of practicing law doesn't mean I've seen every possible accident.

It means I've learned where to look when the answer isn't obvious.

Sometimes it's a detail in a medical record.

Sometimes it's something in an insurance policy.

Sometimes it's a witness, a photograph, or a piece of evidence that changes the way you understand what happened.

Sometimes it's simply knowing which question hasn't been asked yet.

That's what experience brings to an auto accident case.

Not assumptions.

Perspective. Preparation. And knowing where to look.

I've spent nearly four decades representing accident victims in St. Petersburg and Tampa Bay—and I bring that experience to every client I represent.

October brings a little more activity to our neighborhoods.

Evening walks. Football games. Fall festivals. Outdoor events. And before long, Halloween will bring plenty of families and children onto neighborhood streets.
At the same time, daylight continues getting shorter.

That makes October a good month to pay extra attention when you're driving after dark, especially on residential streets and around busy community areas.

Slow down. Scan beyond the vehicle directly in front of you. Watch crosswalks and intersections carefully. And give pedestrians and cyclists plenty of room.

You don't need snow or falling leaves for the change of season to affect the way you drive.

Stay safe, St. Pete. And if you're injured in an auto accident, call The St. Pete Lawyer at 727-381-9200.

St. Pete has changed quite a bit over nearly four decades.

So have the cars we drive, the technology inside them, the roads we travel, and the way insurance claims are handled.

I've had a front-row seat to many of those changes while practicing law here.

But the fundamentals of representing an accident victim haven't changed.

Listen carefully. Ask the right questions. Know the law. Examine the evidence.

Prepare thoroughly. And be ready to advocate for your client.

Nearly 40 years of experience isn't simply a number.

It's thousands of conversations, questions, decisions, negotiations, and lessons that inform how I approach the next person who walks through my door.

The season may be changing.

My commitment to this community isn't.

Same commute. Same roads. Different light.

As we move into fall, sunset gradually arrives earlier—and that means more driving during dusk and lower-light conditions.

This is a good time to:
• Check that all your headlights and taillights are working.
• Clean your windshield, inside and out.
• Watch carefully for pedestrians and cyclists.
• Give yourself extra time to react at intersections and crosswalks.

One more Florida-specific issue? Sun glare.

That low late-afternoon sun can make it difficult to see what's directly ahead of you. Keep sunglasses handy, use your visor, and slow down when visibility is compromised.

A seasonal change doesn't have to be dramatic to change the conditions on the road.

If an auto accident changes your plans, call The St. Pete Lawyer at 727-381-9200.

Fall in St. Pete doesn't exactly arrive with sweaters, fireplaces, and leaves changing color.

We're more likely to welcome the season with palm trees and the A/C still running.
But a new season is always a good reminder to reset, and that includes the way we drive.

Put down the phone. Leave enough space between vehicles. Slow down in bad weather. Watch for pedestrians and cyclists. And don't let a familiar route tempt you into driving on autopilot.

After nearly four decades representing people injured in auto accidents, I know how quickly an ordinary drive can become anything but ordinary.

Enjoy fall, Florida style - and stay safe out there.
