My conversation with Angie Weber on the Divorce Discussions Podcast is live!

We covered a lot of practical ground. Where to start with beneficiary designations, why our office reviews the divorce decree itself before recommending any changes, what can and cannot be updated while a divorce is still in process, and how to build an asset list when you genuinely do not know what you have out there. If you take one thing from it, let it be this: check your beneficiary designations. It is usually a phone call or a login, and it is the single most overlooked step after a divorce.

But I also shared something more personal. After my own divorce, I sat down to update my healthcare directive, which is a document I draft for clients constantly, and I could not think of anyone to name. I had been living a coupled life for years. So I did what I tell my clients to do and went through my text messages, and I asked my friend Kylie. She said absolutely. And what I did not realize in that moment is that I was not just checking a box on a form, I was starting to build my support system for the next chapter.

Planning is not really about documents. It is about giving the people you love room to breathe when something happens.

Creating a Will requires us to think about things most of us would rather not spend much time thinking about: our own death, the possibility of incapacity, who will care for the people we love, and what life might look like for them when we are no longer here.
