Having undergone multiple spine surgeries myself, the use of artificial discs in Minnesota workers' compensation cases is more than a professional interest for me; it's personal. I've had multiple cervical and lumbar spine surgeries over 30 years. During that time, artificial discs weren't used in Minnesota. Over the last decade, companies have developed artificial discs for both lumbar and cervical surgeries. We've learned, and my clients have experienced, that they often don't work in the lumbar spine but have been successful in the cervical spine. One struggle with lumbar artificial discs is described in a recent Minnesota Workers' Compensation Court of Appeals case I handled. Our client had an unsuccessful artificial lumbar disc surgery, resulting in permanent total disability. If you'd like to read about our victory and the case, follow this link. The Mobi-C is the most popular and, in my opinion, the most successful artificial disc used today in cervical spine surgeries. I've spoken on this topic with surgeons, including Drs. Mary Dunn and Nick Will, who highly recommend the Mobi-C. My clients have experienced excellent results with the Mobi-C in the cervical spine. There's always a risk with surgery, but complications seem fewer with the Mobi-C than with normal cervical fusion. Clients have experienced greater neck flexibility, less infection risk, and faster recovery times. Below is a video describing the procedure and device.
