Since its inception, FLAG has provided an extensive array of legal services to financially distressed farmers and their advocates and attorneys nationwide. During the farm financial crisis of the 1980s, FLAG's work focused on credit issues. FLAG established a strong reputation as a national leader in protecting and preserving family farms. FLAG's work helped thousands of farmers weather that crisi

s and remain on their farms. Since that time, FLAG's work has broadened to include other issues of concern to family farmers and ranchers: sustainable agriculture, corporate concentration and vertical integration in the poultry and livestock industries, contract farming, race discrimination in USDA programs, accountability in government support programs, and legal help for farmers seeking to develop value-added enterprises. By providing legal education, backup support, impact litigation, and legislative and administrative technical assistance services to its client organizations, FLAG continues to play a key role in preserving the family farm system of agriculture in this country.

Farmers' Guide to ECP 2nd Edition October 2025
Natural disasters are a part of life that drastically farmers affect how farmers work and knowing what to do in response will make all the difference.

We now have a NEW GUIDE on our website: Farmers’ Guide to the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP).

Through ECP, farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural producers can rehabilitate farmland and infrastructure that is damaged by natural disasters; and conserve water for livestock, vineyards, and orchards in a drought emergency. The Post-Disaster Tips subsection describes seven best practices, particularly in the weeks immediately after a disaster and at the outset of the application process.

Farmers, farm advocates, farm attorneys, and others are welcome to consult, download, print, or share the Guide for free:

Farmers' Guide to Carbon Contracts now available.

FLAG has just published a Farmers’ Guide to Carbon Contracts. It is designed to help farmers understand carbon market contracts and make an informed decision about whether to agree to a carbon contract. The details for how the carbon is captured by farming practices, how farmers are paid, and other important requirements are set out in the carbon market contract.

This Guide looks closely at those carbon market contracts from the farmer’s perspective. Farmers, farm advocates, farm attorneys, and others are welcome to consult, download, print, or share the Guide for free.
