The bill doesn’t change Ohio’s castle doctrine, which allows gun owners to use force in their homes or vehicles in self-defense against people who are unlawfully inside.

House Bill 228 originally passed the Ohio House with a provision allowing gun owners to no longer have to retreat in a life-threatening situation, known commonly as "stand your ground." The Ohio Senate advanced the bill without that provision.
