The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is aware of the conversations about License Plate Reader [LPR] technology. We hear the concerns from the community and would like to clarify how the technology is utilized in St. Johns County.

SJSO introduced license plate reader technology in 2017 and currently operates 180 cameras countywide.

SJSO utilizes LPRs as an investigative tool to assist with locating wanted and missing individuals, recover stolen vehicles, and investigate violent crimes. When a vehicle of interest is identified, the license plate number is flagged in the database, and law enforcement is immediately notified if the vehicle is located. LPRs only capture a vehicle and its license plate and does not capture a driver’s identity or continuously track where someone travels.

License plate readers are a valuable tool for public safety efforts in St. Johns County, and since 2017, have assisted with:
• Locating 600+ stolen vehicles & 300 stolen tags
• Recovering 164 items of stolen property
• Locating 247 wanted individuals
• Locating 180 missing individuals
• Charging 831 individuals responsible for crimes

SJSO has strict oversight and auditing procedures to prevent the misuse of license plate reader technology. To date, SJSO has not identified any instances of intentional misuse of the system by
our personnel.

Custom homebuilder Spencer Calvert was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison for an organized fraud scheme in St. Johns County bilking property owners of millions of dollars. One of his victims was Bravo TV's Capt. Sandy Yawn of "Below Deck."

All eyes are on the County Commission as a major land-use decision comes before St. Johns County commissioners at an August 19th special meeting, where they will consider six agricultural enclave applications that could transform thousands of acres of agricultural land. St. Augustine Local News is working to obtain the rules governing virtual attendance by county commissioners after two commissioners attended the last meeting remotely.
