Protect Florida's State Parks
Good afternoon,
Florida's state parks are world class because they protect some of the last, best remaining examples of wild Florida. I am asking the Governor and Secretary to abandon proposals to develop state park habitat for golf courses, lodging, pickleball courts, and more under the auspices of Governor DeSantis' Great Outdoors Initiative. These are not compatible or appropriate uses for Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Anastasia State Park, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, Camp Helen State Park, Grayton Beach State Park, Hillsborough River State Park, Honeymoon Island State Park, Dr. Von Mizell – Eula Johnson State Park, and Oleta River State Park.
Many of these parks are already operating at peak visitation within communities that already have ample private and public sector lodging, golf courses, and pickleball courts. Florida has no shortage of places to swing a golf club, sample the continental breakfast, or try your hand at pickleball—but increasingly rare are the opportunities to spot the deep blue feathers of a Florida Scrub-Jay, witness the miracle of neotropical bird migration, or experience Florida in all its natural beauty.
These proposals are wasteful and unnecessary, and the opportunities provided for public comment are limited to a single hour, during the workday, when many Floridians cannot attend.
Thank you for your consideration and assistance in protecting these irreplaceable resources.
Sincerely,
