Providing know your rights training sessions & legal observers for protests in the Sacramento area. We seek to unite the lawyers, law students, legal workers and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people, to the end that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property interests. Our

aim is to bring together all those who recognize the importance of safeguarding and extending the rights of workers, women, LGBTQ people, farmers, people with disabilities and people of color, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; who seek actively to eliminate racism; who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; and who look upon the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression.

The Ticket Defense Clinic is a National Lawyers Guild project created to alleviate the oppressive and excessive criminalization of our city's most vulnerable unhoused members. Tickets pile up against them for simply sitting on the streets, trying to cook food, having an open container, having a dog, having no bathroom - the list goes on and on. In addition, tickets turn into “failures to appear” and warrants that may prevent access to social services, housing, and work opportunities.

The Ticket Defense Clinic is a legal clinic that directly represents unhoused folx at no cost in criminal matters in which they are not entitled to an attorney from the Public Defender’s Office.

💚 What is a Legal Observer? 💚

Legal Observers are volunteers trained by the NLG who show up at protests, marches, or other actions to:

💚Monitor law enforcement activity

💚Support arrested activists

💚Empower protestors and deter police misconduct ‍

💚Document events for future legal action

You don’t need a law degree to participate in mass defense work, and it is vital for folks who are the targets of systemic oppression, especially at the hands of the state and legal system, to have a say in what their local mass defense programs look like. We encourage all community stakeholders to attend this training to learn about the role of legal observers, how to get involved, trauma-informed legal observing and protest aftercare, and how to connect people who have been arrested at an action with jail support.

We will have region-specific breakout rooms to connect you with others in your area and cover any specific information you need to start legal observing locally.

A UC Davis student is currently facing academic disciplinary charges with the Office of Student Support and Judicial Affairs (OSSJA), which administers student discipline at UC Davis. Sign on to our letter to get her academic disciplinary charges dismissed.

On May 24, 2024, Cheyenne Xiong was detained by the UC Davis Police Department (UC Davis PD) for alleged vandalism during a Pro-Palestine protest on campus. During the arrest, a UC Davis PD officer discharged his firearm. The school stated to the media that the gun was fired accidently. Instead of investigating this potential police misconduct, the University is attempting to punish Cheyenne by possibly subjecting her to self-incrimination and violating her due process rights.

These disciplinary charges come at a time when campuses across the country are being increasingly militarized to quell student voices. Students at UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, UC Santa Cruz, and colleges all over the country have continuously been met with police violence by the very institution tasked with protecting their safety. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against UC Santa Cruz for depriving over 100 students and faculty members of their due process rights by banning them from campus for participating in a pro-Palestine protest. UC Davis Chancellor Gary May has enforced policies prohibiting mask wearing to conceal identity. UC Police Departments across the state have requested 3,000 rounds of pepper munitions, 500 rounds of 40mm impact munitions, 12 drones, 9 gr***de launchers, and more.

Cheyenne is currently waiting for an investigatory interview on October 4, 2024 with OSSJA. Sign on to demand that OSSJA drop the charges against her.

🚨FREE THE SIX!!🚨 Six women were just arrested at the Capitol by CHP, for daring to hold Gavin Newsom accountable to his word to do what is needed to build one million new affordable housing units by 2030. One of those arrested is a Camp Resolution councilmember (who has been swept multiple times since Camp’s 8/26 eviction, and is noticed to be swept again tomorrow!). ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! CALL SAC COUNTY JAIL RIGHT NOW AND DEMAND THEIR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 916-874-6752

💚Join the NLG Far West Region for Sweeps Defense Skillsharw for Legal Observers! 💚

Organized in conjunction with the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Sacramento chapters of the National Lawyers Guild, this skillshare involves community partners WRAP (Western Regional Advocacy Project), organizers and residents from the Wood Street encampment in Oakland, attorneys from DREDF (Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund), and advocates supporting the unhoused community.

The skillshare will focus on providing context regarding the current laws in California and across the country that have criminalized the unhoused community. It will also address local ordinances and enforcement tactics, the role of the NLG and Legal Observers, and provide guidance on how to approach legal observation of encampment sweeps from a trauma-informed perspective. This skillshare will also help Legal Observer programs build their Mass Defense toolkits, from filing pro se lawsuits, gathering declarations, and filing Public Records Act Requests.
