Copyright. Trademark. Patent.
Three different protections. Three different purposes.
And most people only hear about them when something has already gone wrong.
So we're slowing it down.
What each one actually covers.
Where speakers and creators get it wrong.
How it connects to your content, your name, and your stage.
Then we open the room.
Real questions. Real scenarios.
Because clarity is the first layer of protection.
Hope to see you there!

Every speaking opportunity comes with terms that outlive it
Ownership clauses
Licensing rights
Usage permissions
All deciding who benefits from your voice long-term
We'll break down what that language actually means
And how control shifts through β€œstandard” terms
Because contracts are not paperwork.
They are direction.
Hope to see you there!

05/29/2026

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball in 1947.
But it was Rachel Robinson who made sure that legacy did not die with him.
After Jackie passed in 1972, Rachel did not just grieve. She got to work.
She established the Jackie Robinson Foundation, protected his name, his likeness, his story.
She made sure that no one could commercialize what he built without accountability.
She turned a legacy into a legal structure that has lasted over 50 years.
That is not just love. That is strategy.
Most founders and creators do not think about what happens to their brand after they are gone. Or after a partnership dissolves. Or after they walk away from a business. They build something real and leave it unprotected.
Rachel Robinson understood something that too many people learn too late.
The name is the asset. And if you do not protect the name, someone else will profit from it.
She kept the name.
She built the foundation.
She controlled the narrative.
And because of that, Jackie Robinson's legacy belongs to his family and his community, not to whoever had the resources to claim it first.
That is what legal structure does.
It makes sure the right people stay in control of what was built.

An HBCU just out-negotiated the NFL, the SEC, and the USPTO β€” and won.
Grambling State University secured federal trademark registration for its iconic black-and-gold "G" logo in March 2026.
A logo the university has carried since 1974. A logo synonymous with Tiger pride, Eddie Robinson, and over five decades of HBCU excellence.
It took nearly 30 years to make it official.
The Green Bay Packers have held that "G" shape since 1961.
They granted the University of Georgia rights to a similar mark in 1964.
When Grambling first tried to register in 1998, the USPTO declined.
So they went back. Negotiated directly with the Packers.
Negotiated with Georgia. Built a legal argument around distinctiveness, legacy, and longstanding use.
The condition: Grambling's "G" stays black and gold. Always.
The USPTO approved it.
Grambling State can now stop unlicensed sellers, expand licensing deals, and control how that mark moves commercially β€” for the first time in the institution's history.
This is IP and impact in action.

Too many creators have built the work
And lost control in the contract
Not because the work wasn't valuable
But because the clauses weren't understood
So we signed
And the value kept moving without us
This session is about changing that
Because what you sign decides what you keep.
Hope to see you there!

Most people focus on the opportunity
Very few focus on the clause inside it
The one that decides:
Who owns the recording
Who controls distribution
Who benefits after you leave the stage
We're getting specific on the clauses that impact your control
Because getting on stage is one thing
Keeping ownership is another
Hope to see you there!

A new standard just got set.
A'ja Wilson signed a 3-year, $5 million supermax deal with the Las Vegas Aces β€” the richest contract in WNBA history.
She was drafted in 2018.
Since then: 4-time MVP. Championships. A franchise cornerstone.
And now, a contract that reflects that level of impact.
This didn't happen overnight.
It followed a new collective bargaining agreement that opened the door for higher salaries and better terms for players.
Structure changed first.
Then the outcomes followed.
There's something powerful about watching that alignment happen in real time.
Talent meeting timing.
Excellence meeting opportunity.
For a long time, the work was there before the compensation ever caught up.
Especially for women.
Especially for Black women.
Now we're seeing what it looks like when the system starts to reflect the value that's always been present.
This is what progress looks like.
Not perfect.
But measurable.
Pay attention to moments like this.
They show what becomes possible when structure shifts in the right direction.

Madam C.J. Walker built one of the most successful businesses of her time starting from a wash basin and an idea.
Born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 to formerly enslaved parents, she was widowed by 20 and working as a washerwoman.
Hair loss led her to experiment with her own solutions.
That experiment became a product.
That product became a business.
She didn't stop at selling.
She built a full system around it.
A product line designed for Black women.
A network of trained sales agents across the country.
A company that created jobs, income, and independence for thousands of women.
Her success was not accidental.
It was structured.
It was intentional.
It was built to scale.
At a time when access was limited, she created her own pathways.
For founders and creators, especially those building within communities that have historically been excluded, there's something steady in that example.
The work is not only to create.
It is to organize what you create.
To build systems around it.
To make it sustainable beyond the first win.
That is how something grows beyond a moment.
That is how it lasts.

A copyright claim just silenced the Department of Homeland Security.
Not a protest.
Not a petition.
Not a press conference.
A creator exercised her legal rights β€” and a federal government post went dark.
DHS posted a recruitment video for ICE set to Addison Rae's song "Diet Pepsi."
No license.
No permission.
No conversation.
The caption said "ICE is HOT."
They used her work to recruit agents for an administration that has made creators, immigrants, and communities feel anything but safe.
She filed a copyright claim. The video went dark.
This is the part that people who dismiss IP as "corporate greed" need to sit with.
Copyright is not a fancy certificate.
It is not a legal formality for people with money and lawyers.
It is a right.
A protected, enforceable, federally recognized right that belongs to the creator β€” regardless of who comes for it.
Even if that someone is the President of the United States' administration.
Your creative work is not just content. It is property. And property has rights attached to it.
Register it. Protect it. Enforce it.
Because the day may come when you need it to fight back.
