Couple hundred miles on the ‘99 Heritage today. Toured “Olana” State Historic site (Frederick Church’s masterpiece) and Woodstock to see the graves of Levon Helm and found Rick Denko’s too.
Dinner in Delaware County (Margaretville) and gotta get home before dark. No leather jackets!

Good morning. It’s 6:00 am on Friday, August 23rd in the year of our Lord 2024 and time for “Murrin’s Cuff Link Chronicles” a/k/a IYKYK.
“SQUARES and CIRCLES”
These are random links, drawn from the bottom
of a box. Of no significant pedigree, import or acquisition. Just a square and a circle. One is, in simple euclidian geometric terms, a regular quadrilateral of 4 sides, in equal length, all angles of 90 degrees. Simple.
The circle, even simpler. A round plane, whose boundary consists of equidistant points from a fixed center point. They are as different from each other as people. You may be one (square), you may be the other (circle), or maybe, like me, a mix of both.

My friend Don is square. He’s a cool Harley riding, bourbon drinking fun guy and all, but he’s a ‘by the book’ square. He’s an accountant. My accountant actually. Financially successful. Black and white reasoning. His decisions have no gray area. His business advice to me is always succinct, clear and by the book. He does NOT cut corners. He HAS corners. Don has a lovely wife and adorable kids and grandkids. He lives in a high end subdivision, 1 acre lots, just put in a pool. My friend Don, SQUARE. I love him!

Then you have my friend Kevro. He is definitely a circle. He possesses a wanderlust to roam, a ‘one day at a time’ attitude, and a live in the moment lifestyle that allows him to come and go, like the wind. He cuts corners with a chainsaw. Kevro has no wife, no mortgage or any financial or social tether to a particular place on the planet. He works hard, but for himself and comes and goes at his whim. He lives near the beach now, gets more ass than a toilet seat and can move his life across country in 1 motorcycle load and often does.
My friend Kevro, CIRCLE.
I love him.

Most people are a mix of Don and Kevro. Square and Circle. I lean towards Don, but I yearn for my inner Kevro. The Freudian Id we all suppress, our circle. The societal norm we all desire, our square.
Here’s to those committed to being 1 or the other, all the way. Brave, vested, committed, no compromises.
Unlike myself, too unregimented to be a Don, too tethered to be Kevro.

Good morning. It’s 5:00 am on Friday, August 9th in the year of our Lord 2024 and time for “Murrin’s Cuff Link Chronicles” a/k/a IYKYK.
“Honey Bees”. My links this week are pewter and acrylic Italian Honey Bees.
“Apis mellifera ligustica”, entomologically speaking. We keep several hives of these docile bees at FFF Ranch, LLC. My first born Brenna is now the resident entomologist on a ranch in Southern Arizona and got me interested in bee keeping when she was in middle school. These particular bees are endemic to the continental part of Italy, south of the Alps and north of Sicily, where the species survived the last ice age. Brought to England by noted master beekeeper Thomas White Woodbury in 1859, they were imported to the Americas during our civil war. This is the only food we humans eat that DOES NOT deteriorate, degrade or spoil. Edible and sweet honey was found in 1922 in the Egyptian tomb of King Tutankhamun, 3,300 years old. It does not last that long in my house. The honey bee, the most under-appreciated life form on our planet, in my humble estimation. They are the pollinators , life givers, crop producers, and are responsible for pollinating 80% of plants, fruits, nuts and trees on this planet that we as humans depend upon for survival. Gives “Busy As A Bee” a whole new meaning. When it comes to honey, buy local, store at room temperature and try some on your toast. And if you see a hive “swarming” in your yard, do not panic, call a beekeeper, they’ll take them for you. Props to the Italian honey bee. The two on my wrists should remind us all, to not take the little things in life for granted. Roger W. Orlando and Raymond V Giudice, my Italian friends, what say you?

It’s Murrin’s Monday Morning Motivation for June 3rd, in the year of our Lord, 2024. 6:00am.
“HUMILITY”

“Clive Staples Lewis” (CS Lewis-FBA, was born in Belfast, Ireland (before partition) in 1898. He was Englishman from Ireland and penned over 30 novels selling over 1,000,000 bound copies, including “The Chronicles of Narnia”. He was on the faculty of both Oxford and Cambridge and received his FBA (Fellows of the British Academy) and served with the British in both the 1st and 2nd world wars.
He has a memorial at Poet’s
Corner in Westminster Abbey that Ms. Mandy and I visited last summer. Over 100 British writers are either buried there or memorialized there including Shakespeare, Jane Austin and Charles Dickens to name a few. He was friends with Yeats and Tolkien and many fine writers which supports the adage that you are the average of your 5 closest friends. He declined a “CBE” designation (Commander of the British Empire) bestowed by King George VI in 1951, as he didn’t want association with political affiliation. He shyed from public and avoided recognition, humble, possessing humility to his detriment. I cannot drink tea, without thinking of him. Humility, a fine trait, lacking in modern society. Pass it on….
