PSA/Rant for the day. Since this past 3 weeks has caused me to wear many hats, one being counselor to ensure parents they are doing the right thing by actually claiming their dependents. Let me break this down, first, do you pay more than HALF of Rent, utilities, groceries cell phone, auto insurance, medical insurance, tuition, books, auto payments...(this list can grow long) for your child? This is aimed at working age children age 16-22. If so, they are your dependents. You received $878 credits from IRS/CA on your tax return and IF you only have one dependent and are single you paid a much lower tax rate as HOH vs. Single filer, could be in the $1000's saved on your tax return. So, question, if you pay 50% of list above ( I know you do since this was discussed at your tax appt), Why would you give that up for your dependent to receive $1200? it doesn't make sense. At the very least you give up $878 out of your pocket for them to get $1200? That means only $322 is coming from the Gov't, the $878 from you! This is the perfect opportunity to teach some basic economics to our children. We all know we have an entitled generation(s), probably plural, teach them about what they actually pay for and explain why they have to sit this one out! If you really feel they support themselves above 50%, then when i see you in the spring, take them off of your return and they can get their $1200 credit on their own 2020 tax return. I would advise you change your withholding now to adjust for this. Yes, that is sarcasm as I know you will continue to pay for more than $1200 of their life until they are completely on their own. Last part, when they work and earn under $12200 they pay zero tax, they get all of their withholding back. They made their wages at no tax consequence, they were "tax filers" to get ALL of their withholding back. This is really a "taxpayer" stimulus to keep those paying the big bills, paying the big bills! this is you parents! Do NOT feel bad, you deserve to claim your actual dependents. My two cents of course, take it for what it is worth, i just hate to see folks miss out on a teaching moment in real life like this.
