When ultra-high-net-worth divorces enter the public eye, dividing complex executive assets, trusts, and business holdings requires precise financial and legal acumen.

In a recent piece by The Wall Street Journal exploring the high-profile divorce of Two Sigma co-founder John Overdeck, Carl J. Soranno, Chair of Brach Eichler’s Family Law Services Practice, shared insights on one of the most contentious issues in high-stakes family law: determining what truly qualifies as marital property versus separate, non-marital assets.

As Soranno highlights in the feature, the line between marital and non-marital property can dramatically shape the outcome of multi-million dollar asset distributions.

U.S. taxpayers with undisclosed foreign accounts face new uncertainty as the IRS appears to have quietly closed its Delinquent FBAR Submission Procedures pathway.

Following the removal of the program webpage from IRS.gov, taxpayers with past-due FinCEN 114 (FBAR) filings can no longer assume penalty-free relief is readily available. Moving forward, individuals must evaluate alternatives, including the Streamlined Filing Compliance Procedures or submitting with a reasonable cause statement.

If you own a high-end condo, co-op, or home in New York City that isn't your primary residence, a new annual surcharge is now in effect.

Signed into law under New York State's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget, the pied-à-terre tax impacts non-primary residential properties valued from $1M+ (condos/co-ops) to $5M+ (1-3 family homes). With Department of Finance notices expected soon and strict 30-day appeal windows, property owners must understand their exposure, exemptions, and entity look-through rules.
