THOMAS J. MOORE II
In his 20-year career, Tommy has focused on criminal practice in the state District and Superior Courts. He has represented over two dozen individuals charged with

homicide. He has tried over a dozen homicide cases to a jury, including the acquittal of Wallace Fields, who was found Not Guilty of first degree murder in Edgecombe County in May of 2010. His trial experience is not limited to homicide cases alone. His extensive trial experience includes violent felonies, drug charges, property crimes and misdemeanor appeals. He is certified by the NC State Capital Defenders Office to represent indigent individuals charged with capital crimes statewide. He has been active in educating the community on issues related to the death penalty as well as lobbying lawmakers on behalf of capital litigators. He has spoken at a number of Continuing Legal Education seminars concerning capital litigation and stories related to many of his higher profile cases.

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Mrs. Moore. She was the rock of her family and was filled with love and compassion for everyone she met. She will be greatly missed by all. Please keep Mr. Moore and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they try to navigate through this terrible tragedy.

Also last week was a sad week for our local legal community.On Sunday Feb 6 we lost Halifax County attorney Gilbert Chichester. Gilbert was an amazing lawyer and a true Southern Gentleman.Although his primary practice was in Halifax he ventured down to our district occasionally where he was always well received and respected. Gilbert was a lion of the legal community and will be missed but never forgotten.

On Monday we lost another colleague.Andy Gay had been practicing law in Wendell/Zebulon since he graduated from Campbell Law School. He had just been in Nashville district court the previous Friday. Andy,like Gilbert was a master of his craft. He was folksy and friendly in the best way. He was always greeted warmly by our legal community and it’s hard to believe that he is gone.

Today is a day we will always remember and carry heavy on our hearts. We will never forgot those who were involved in this tragedy and pray for the ones who are still affected whether it be from the heartbreak of losing a family member or those who survived with trauma or who have health issues from that day.

After years and years and one retirement Edgecombe clerk Ides Pettaway retired today. Always a smile on her face and a low key wicked sense of humor, she will be sorely missed by all. Godspeed Ides and please know that you touched so many people on a daily basis.
