When should you update your estate plan?
Life is full of changes, and your estate plan should evolve right alongside you. While creating a plan is a fantastic first step, keeping it up-to-date is just as important to ensure your wishes are always honored and your loved ones remain protected.
So, when is it time for a review? As a general rule, we recommend checking in every three to five years. However, certain major life events should trigger an immediate update. These include:
* Welcoming a new family member: Whether it’s a new baby, an adoption, or a new grandchild, you’ll want to ensure they are included.
* Marriage or Divorce: Changes in your marital status drastically impact how your assets should be distributed.
* Relocating: If you’ve recently moved in or out of California, different state laws might affect your current plan.
* Buying or Selling Property: Acquiring a new home or selling a major asset changes the makeup of your estate.
* Changes in Finances: A significant increase or decrease in your assets, or a transition into retirement, warrants a fresh look at your strategy.
* Loss of a Loved One: The passing of a beneficiary, trustee, or executor means you need to name new individuals to step into those roles.
Your estate plan is a living document. If you’ve recently experienced any of these milestones, it might be time for an update.
We’re here to help you navigate these changes with clarity and peace of mind.
