The Trump administration has taken its first step toward opening federal land for housing development.
On Monday, Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner announced a joint task force to identify suitable federal land for new homes.
The initiative focuses on the 500 million acres managed Department of the Interior, which oversees national parks and wildlife refuges. While much of the federal land—mostly in the West—is uninhabitable, some areas near major urban centers, like parts of Nevada and California, could be prime candidates for development.
While housing economists support expanding home construction, using federal land presents challenges. Senior Economic Data Analyst Hannah Jones explains, "Success depends on local economies supporting development. It requires more than land—materials, labor, and infrastructure—and housing alone isn’t enough; jobs and amenities are key for thriving communities."
