We talk about being the first, but Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893) was the ultimate blueprint for every pioneer in our community.

She didn't just break the glass ceiling; she built the whole house from the ground up. Starting her education at a Quaker school in PA and later crushing it at Howard University Law School, she was a true intellectual powerhouse.

This sister was the FIRST Black woman to publish a newspaper, the Provincial Freeman, showing us the power of controlling our own narrative. And she didn't stop there. She was on the front lines as a recruiter for the Union Army, fought as a lawyer, and was a key voice in the suffragist movement.

Mary Ann was about that action: total pioneer energy for every urban community striving for self-determination and Black liberation.

Let's honor the legacy of a woman who never asked for a seat at the table: she built her own and then opened the door for everyone else.

Did you know the blueprint for the Black beauty industry was drawn in 1900? 💅

✨ Annie Turnbo Malone (1869–1957) was a trailblazing pioneer and one of the first Black female millionaires in the U.S. By the 1920s, her empire was valued at a staggering $14 million!

💰 Her crown jewel was Poro College in St. Louis: much more than just a beauty school. It was a massive community hub featuring a theater, guest rooms, a laundry, and even a chapel. It provided a safe, grand space for Black organizations to meet during segregation.

🏛️ Annie mentored the legendary Madam C.J. Walker (who worked as a Poro agent from 1903–1905) and used her wealth for massive philanthropy. But when her business faced a high-profile legal battle during a 1927 divorce, she fought to keep her legacy intact: eventually moving her headquarters to Chicago in 1930. 💼

Protect your 'Poro College.' Whether it's your contracts or your strategy, make sure your business stays yours.
