You named each other. But who comes next?

You probably pictured your spouse carrying on, paying the bills, and caring for the people you love. It is understandable if the conversation stopped there.

If you die in the same accident or only days apart, the next step deserves its own plan. Does property pass to your spouse and then under their estate plan? Or does it go to the backup recipients you chose? Different assets can give different answers.

This week’s article explains survivorship clauses, the rules that can require someone to outlive you for a specified period before inheriting. It also shows why a joint trust and a life insurance beneficiary form need to be reviewed together.

Less than 24 hours from now, my son will turn 18. That means that, legally, I'll automatically be cut off from helping him if he needs my help. Luckily for him, his dad is an estate planning lawyer and will have the 4 documents he needs to sign ready so that I won't lose my ability to help him in an emergency. KEEP READING...🔽

Today, my soon-to-be 18-year-old took his two younger brothers out to the outlet stores to do some back-to-school clothes shopping. He’s getting in some brother hang out time, while I was home working…

Way more of you said you were interested in hearing more about how parents can keep the right to help their 18-year-olds in an emergency than I thought. I’m so excited for y’all to hear this.

So we’re moving forward with our Popsicles & Planning event. Let’s get the details down!

When: Saturday, Aug 8 from 7:30 pm until 9:00 pm

Where: Roanoke Community Pool

Who: parents of 18-year-olds or soon-to-be 18-year-olds, the 18-year-olds, and their families

What: come enjoy a night in the pool, eating some popsicles, and listening to a brief presentation by me about this crucial planning step…

Hey y’all. I need your help. Please keep reading below…

Right now, I’m getting my soon-to-be 18-year-old ready to go to college. As an estate planning attorney at Longhorn Legacy Planning, I know what’s around the corner for him and what documents I know he’ll need to sign to make sure that my wife and I can help him if an emergency hits as he goes off on his own.

But too many parents that have 18-year-olds or soon-to-be 18-year-olds don’t know.

And they’ll find out too late.

So I am thinking about doing the following:
- renting out the Roanoke Community pool
- providing popsicles
- inviting families that have a new 18-year-old or soon-to-be 18-year-old to attend for free, with their whole families
- let them enjoy a night free fun in a great pool (with a fun water slide)
- have a 15-minute conversation with parents about these important documents; &
- answer any questions

I think this would be a great evening and very informative, but before I pull the trigger…

I want to know…
