Miles Bartholomew is considered the inventor of the first successful stenograph machine, developing the shorthand device in 1877 and patenting it in 1879. Known as the "Father of the Stenograph,"

Bartholomew was an official court reporter from Belleville, Illinois, who created the machine to improve on pen shorthand. The original 1877/1879 machine featured ten keys that could be depressed to create a series of dots and dashes, similar to Morse code. Purpose: It was designed to be a "Machine for writing shorthand," designed specifically for court reporters.

While earlier shorthand machines existed, Bartholomew’s was the first to achieve success in the field, with models used by reporters as late as 1937.

Bartholomew founded the United States Stenograph Corporation to manufacture the machines, Developed a key commercial stenography device around 1913, which is considered the direct ancestor of modern stenotype machines.[Stenograph, L.L.C.: The modern company grew out of earlier developments, with the "Stenograph" name later trademarked for machines produced by Stenographic Machines, Inc., founded in 1938.

Reporters graduate school at a speed of 225 words per minute. Mark Kislingbury set a Guinness World record for the "fastest court reporter," achieving an impressive speed of 360 words per minute, and then he beat that record by achieving 370 words per minute.
