August is National Make-A-Will Month — but having a will doesn't necessarily mean your estate plan is complete.

For California families, a comprehensive estate plan may include much more than a will: a revocable living trust, power of attorney, advance health care directive, updated beneficiary designations, guardianship planning for minor children, and special needs planning when appropriate.

And here's one of the biggest misconceptions we hear:

**A will alone does not necessarily avoid probate in California.**

National Make-A-Will Month is a good reminder to ask:

✓ Do I have a current will or trust?
✓ Are the right people named to act for me?
✓ Is my trust properly funded?
✓ Are my beneficiary designations current?
✓ Have I planned for incapacity — not just death?
✓ If I have minor children, have I nominated guardians?
✓ Does anyone I love require special needs planning?
✓ Would my family know what to do if something happened to me tomorrow?
