"When a girl is forced to marry before 18, it's not love, it's not excitement, it's not a happy day, it's a human rights abuse," Reiss said. "It's a form of modern-day slavery. We are here to show legislators you're chaining and silencing girls.”

Protesters dressed in wedding gowns and chains rallied at the Ohio Statehouse, urging lawmakers to advance a bill that would ban child marriage.

Zero opposition. Still no vote.

Ohio's proposed child marriage ban is one of the strongest in the country. 18. No exceptions. No loopholes. No one opposes it.

The Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee has still not brought it to a vote.

Ohio. Here's where we stand.

A strong bill to ban child marriage — 18, no exceptions — is sitting in the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee.

Zero people have opposed it.
Zero organizations have opposed it.
Zero votes have been held.

People from across Ohio have emailed legislators this week demanding a vote. Advocates, human rights organizations and survivors have spoken.

Ohio Senate Democrats Ohio Senate Republicans: The question is simple. If no one opposes this bill, why won't you vote on it?

We will keep asking until we get an answer.

17 states have banned child marriage. Ohio is not one of them — not because Ohioans don't want it, not because organizations oppose it, but because the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee won't bring it to a vote.

17 states. Zero opposition in Ohio. Still no vote.

If you live in Ohio, email your legislators right now and tell them that's not good enough: https://bit.ly/4uZryaE

Ohio Senate Democrats Ohio Senate Republicans — be state number 18.

In 2001, Stephanie Lowry was 16 years old, 16 weeks pregnant, and grieving her father.

Her mother forced her to marry a 19-year-old man.

She endured years of physical, sexual, and financial abuse before she escaped — then rebuilt her life and became an advocate.

She recently published an op-ed article in the Columbus Dispatch with our founder/executive director Fraidy Reiss asking Ohio's Senate Judiciary Committee one question: why won't you vote on SB341?

The bill that would have protected Stephanie costs $0. It has zero opposition. Every state east and north of Ohio — all the way to Maine — has already banned child marriage.

Ohio has not.

"Ohio legislators must stop cruelly ignoring girls' suffering." — Stephanie Lowry and Fraidy Reiss
