Introducing our 2026 Lacy Pro Bono Volunteer of the Year award winner, Jeffrey Hanna!
A former stand-up comic turned pro bono powerhouse, Jeff co-chairs McGuireWoods' Richmond pro bono committee, with a focus on immigration cases that change lives. He received high praise from colleagues and clients alike for his unwavering dedication to pro bono immigration work, his skillful advocacy for unaccompanied immigrant children seeking Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and his longstanding leadership as co-chair of McGuireWoods' Richmond pro bono committee.
Since 2021, Jeff has anchored the firm's pro bono partnership with Ayuda, petitioning Virginia courts for the "predicate orders" that unaccompanied minors need before they can pursue federal immigration relief, work that helped earn McGuireWoods Ayuda's 2023 Pro Bono Impact Award. His clients have included a 10-year-old who traveled alone for 16 days from El Salvador to escape abuse, and a teen from Honduras for whom Jeff, partnering with the Legal Aid Justice Center, secured a green card. He has also extended his pro bono commitment into the firm's medical-legal partnership with VCU and Dominion Energy.
Jeff's pro bono record extends beyond immigration: as an associate, he argued and won a case of first impression before the Supreme Court of Virginia, securing an inmate's right to proceed without paying court fees. He has been named to the Virginia Access to Justice Commission's Pro Bono Honor Roll multiple times, most recently in 2026.
