Yesterday, my daughter brought up the offensive comment made about First Lady Michelle Obama. (Social media 😩)

For my non-Black friends, please know this isn’t just an insult. These stereotypes have deep roots in slavery, where Black women were often portrayed as less feminine and unusually strong to help justify harsh labor, physical abuse and exploitation.

Thinking back to a book I read in college, Ain’t I a Woman? by bell hooks. If you’re interested in the historical context behind why some men called Black women “masculine” or even “men,” it’s a great place to start.

Having to explain racism to our children is exhausting. But understanding the history helps explain why certain comments are deeply offensive and carry so much weight.
