The 2026 General Assembly session cultivated a new legal retail ma*****na marketplace in one of the unlikeliest of ways: the annual appropriation act. As Virginia's regulatory framework continues to take shape, local governments are facing important decisions about taxation, zoning, licensing, enforcement, and compliance.

Join us for our upcoming Practical Law for Civic Leaders webinar, Implementation of the Retail Cannabis Marketplace in Virginia, on September 16 from 11am-12pm, where the panel will discuss:

• Understanding the framework for Virginia's licensed retail ma*****na market
• Assessing local options for regulating retail ma*****na businesses
• Evaluating zoning and land use impacts within your community
• Preparing for mandatory local taxation requirements
• Starting local policy discussions on licensing participation, ordinance updates, and departmental considerations

Our panel features Sands Anderson attorneys Max Hlavin, Elizabeth Chupik, and Rebecca Powers, along with Donnie Autry, Assistant County Attorney for Arlington County. Together, they'll provide practical insights into the local implications of ma*****na policy in Virginia and what these developments may mean for planning, governance, and compliance.

How do leaders navigate conflict, rebuild trust, and lead effectively when the stakes are high?

Robyn Hansen and Faith Alejandro recently explored these questions during a presentation on workplace conflict resolution and leadership development at the Virginia Women’s Municipal Leadership Institute's August session (VWMLI).

Their presentation and workshop offered participants insight into addressing challenging workplace dynamics, navigating political pressures, and responding effectively in high-stakes public situations. Through these discussions, the duo shared strategies designed to help government leaders approach complex challenges with confidence and build stronger, more resilient workplaces.

VWMLI supports women in local government by providing the knowledge, connections, and resources they need to grow as leaders and create meaningful change in their communities across Virginia and beyond.

Captains' Table kickstarts this fall on Thursday, September 3! Co-sponsored by Sands Anderson and Atlantic Union Bank, the Captains' Table offers non-profit leaders across Greater Richmond a space to share ideas, address common challenges, and stay ahead of key industry trends.

Ninety-two percent of non-profits are already using AI, but only 15 percent have a policy to govern it. Even then, most of those policies focus on chatbots, while the next wave of AI is already changing how organizations operate.

In this session, Will Melton, founder and CEO of Xponent21 and cofounder of AI Ready RVA, will help non-profit leaders identify where their organizations are on the AI journey through a simple four-stage diagnostic. You'll see an example of AI-enabled technology built for a Richmond non-profit and learn how to use that experience to shape practical, forward-looking AI policies.

➡️ Register for the virtual program on 9/3 here: https://bit.ly/4qo0d0K

Our annual staff retreat was all about building change. 🔨

This week, members of our firm met up at Richmond Community ToolBank in Scott's Addition to build picnic tables for local schools. Working side by side, we spent the morning learning new skills and putting together tables that will serve students for years to come.

After a few hours of drilling and hammering, we enjoyed a delicious lunch from Taste and sweet treats from Westray's Finest Ice Cream.

The experience was a rewarding way to strengthen relationships across our teams while giving back to our community.

Access to safe, stable housing is essential, yet an eviction record can continue to affect individuals long after a case concludes. Expungements provide an important opportunity to clear eligible records and reduce barriers to housing and financial security.

Last week, members of our firm participated in an Unlawful Detainer Expungement Clinic hosted by the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society. Our volunteers prepared 29 expungements on behalf of several legal aid clients, helping them take important steps toward securing housing and improve credit outcomes.

Thanks to all who contributed!
