Today is National Financial Awareness Day, and here’s a truth many people miss: your estate plan is the thread that ties your entire financial life together.

Your retirement accounts. Your life insurance. Your beneficiary designations. Your business interests. Your long-term care strategy.

Each of these matters on its own, but without an estate plan coordinating them, they can work against each other. A beneficiary form that contradicts your will. A business with no succession plan. Assets exposed to unnecessary taxes or probate.

Financial wellness isn’t just about growing your assets. It’s about protecting them, and making sure they end up where you intend.

Let’s look at the whole picture. Call 775-823-9455 or visit nvestateplanning.com.

Welcome to Nevada Know-How — our recurring series breaking down estate planning under Nevada law, in plain English.

In general, for a will to be valid in Nevada:

• The person making it must be at least 18 and of sound mind.
• It must be in writing.
• It must be signed by the person making it (or by someone at their direction).
• It generally must be signed by two competent witnesses.

Nevada does recognize some exceptions, such as handwritten (holographic) wills that meet specific requirements. The details matter, and small mistakes can invalidate an entire document.

This is general information, not legal advice. Our attorneys can make sure your will meets every Nevada requirement.

An estate plan isn’t a “set it and forget it” document. Life changes, and your plan should keep up.

Here are five signs it may be time to review your plan:

• A marriage or divorce
• A new child or grandchild
• A significant move or home purchase
• A change in your health or a loved one’s
• It’s simply been three or more years

Our F.A.M.E. members can make covered updates as their lives evolve, no additional attorney fees for covered amendments. It’s peace of mind, built to last. Call us if you'd like to know more about F.A.M.E.

Tomorrow is Dying to Know Day, a day dedicated to starting the conversations most of us avoid.

None of us like to think about it. But the truth is, the questions we don’t ask before a crisis become the burdens our families carry after one.

Does your family know your wishes?

Do they know who you’ve chosen to make decisions if you can’t? Is your estate plan current, or is it sitting in a drawer, years out of date?

These conversations are a gift. They replace guesswork and conflict with clarity and peace of mind.

Take five minutes this weekend. Ask the question. Start the talk.

When you’re ready to put it in writing, we’re here. Call 775-823-9455 or visit nvestateplanning.com.

When you create a trust, one of the most important decisions is who will manage it. And sometimes, the right answer isn’t a family member.

A professional trustee — like the fiduciary team at Anderson, Dorn & Rader — might be the right fit if:

• There’s no family member with the time, expertise, or neutrality the role requires.
• You want to avoid potential conflict between family members and a trustee.
• The trust will be managed for many years, especially for a beneficiary with special needs.
• You want the security of a regulated, professional institution managing the funds.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all decision.

Our attorneys can help you think through the right choice for your family.

As July comes to a close, we want to say a sincere thank you to Disability Pride Month, and to every family we’ve had the honor of serving.

Disability planning is among the most meaningful work we do. It’s about love, foresight, and the deep human need to know that the people we care for will be okay.

If you have a loved one with a disability and you’ve been thinking about a special needs trust or a long-term care plan, we’re here. No pressure, just a conversation.

Today is Parents’ Day, a day to honor the people who give everything so their families can thrive.

We work with parents every day, parents who want to make sure their kids are provided for, their wishes are honored, and their hard work doesn’t get tied up in court.

The greatest gift you can leave isn’t just what’s in your estate. It’s the clarity, the peace, and the protection that comes from having a real plan in place.

Happy Parents’ Day to all the moms, dads, grandparents, and guardians in Northern Nevada. We’re grateful for the trust you place in us.
