🚗 Business Travel & Speeding Tickets: What the Tax Law Actually Says

Can a speeding ticket—or the costs of fighting it—be written off if it happens during a business trip?

Here’s the short answer:

• Traffic fines and penalties are not tax-deductible, even if the violation occurs while traveling for work. Federal law expressly prohibits deductions for fines or penalties paid to a government.

• Attorney fees and court costs may be deductible only in very limited circumstances, typically when incurred by a self-employed individual and directly related to the operation or protection of a trade or business.

• Employees generally cannot deduct these expenses.

North Carolina largely follows federal treatment, so if an expense isn’t deductible federally, it usually won’t be deductible at the state level either.

⚖️ As always, tax treatment depends on how the expense arises and how your business is structured. When in doubt, consult a qualified tax professional before assuming a deduction applies. Today, we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — a leader whose courage, conviction, and unwavering commitment to justice continue to shape our nation.

Dr. King reminded us that the law is not just a system of rules, but a powerful tool for fairness, equality, and dignity. His call to serve others and stand up for what is right remains as urgent and relevant today as ever.

At Hux & Keeney, PLLC, we pause to reflect on his vision and recommit ourselves to the pursuit of justice, integrity, and service to our community.

“Justice too long delayed is justice denied.”
