“Working with an attorney helped me understand what I could legally do with replacement parts and gave me the confidence to invest more time and energy into the business.” - Jason Bolt

Replacement-part businesses live close to a line that can shift with branding, design rights, compatibility claims, and product language.

That tension won't scare away good operators. Clarity on what the company can sell, say, and scale tends to unlock better decisions on inventory, marketing, and next-stage investment.

M&A diligence has a way of turning old shortcuts into present-day questions.

Buyers tend to zero in on:
- IP created by contractors
- Customer agreements with awkward assignment language
- Equity promises parked in email
- Approvals missing from the file

A quiet cleanup before a process goes live gives buyers less room to shape the narrative.

"[...] Honestly, entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. You need an extremely high threshold for pain and perseverance. Starting Dust has been amazing, but it’s also the hardest thing I’ve ever done. You give up a lot of balance and social life for a while. The trick is holding on long enough to “pop up”, like wakeboarding, where you finally break through the drag and start to glide." - Colin Godby

Entrepreneurship requires a high pain threshold, and plenty of founders will nod at that without needing a poster on the wall.

There’s a stretch where effort feels like drag and the company gives little back. Then something clicks: product, timing, team, market, or all four at once. The work still stays hard. The motion finally turns cleaner.

Commercial agreements reveal how a company really sells, delivers, and handles friction.

The first draft usually carries the optimism of the sales call. Redlines bring out the operational truth: scope, acceptance language, payment timing, data use, and exit rights

Those pages say a lot about how the business runs under pressure.

Headline valuation gets the attention. Control rights shape the next few years.

Watch how the term sheet handles:
- board seats
- protective provisions
- option pool math
- liquidation preference
- consent rights

Founders and executives usually see the economics right away. The quieter clauses deserve equal airtime before signatures make it on the page.

Happy Pride Month!

Here’s to living openly, building community, and making room for people to show up as themselves in every room they enter. Progress needs courage, generosity, and daily acts of respect. Wishing everyone a month full of celebration, reflection, and joy.

Happy Birthday, Tom Armstrong!

Hope the day brings good company, something great to eat, and at least one part of the celebration that goes a little off script in the best way. Wishing you a birthday with plenty of laughs, a full glass, and no reason to check a single notification for a while.

Here’s to a great year ahead and a day well spent.

"The corporate structure is very layered, it took the fun out of design. When I was able get away from it to teach and be around young people who were sponges, it made me fall back in love with the idea of designing footwear." - D'Wayne Edwards with Pensole Lewis

Scale can put layers between a founder and the craft that pulled them in at the outset.

Teaching, building around curious people, or returning to the creative side of the work can bring the spark back. Plenty of leaders spend years building reach, then find fresh energy when the work gets human again.

Equity conversations are simpler when the team is small.

Years later, a financing or exit process pulls those same conversations back into the light:
- A side promise in a text thread
- A repurchase right missing from the final draft
- A vesting schedule remembered two different ways

That’s where valuation discussions lose momentum.

Every founder should think about their company like part of a larger portfolio:

- Investors have a portfolio of bets
- You have a portfolio of markets, products, and partnerships
- Your legal and business structure is the frame holding it all together

Ask yourself: which part of your portfolio is overexposed? One customer, one investor, one country? That’s a signal to shore things up before the next big move.
