As the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally approaches, please be mindful, there is no such thing as a "small" motorcycle crash. When it comes to insurance, many people focus on protecting their most expensive vehicle(s). From a personal injury protection standpoint, your motorcycle deserves just as much - if not more - attention.
When a rider goes down, the injuries are often serious—and the medical bills pile up before you leave the emergency trauma center. Unfortunately, many motorcycle insurance policies simply are not built to cover the true cost of a catastrophic injury crash - the kind you are more likely to incur on a motorcycle compared to a vehicle. After more than a decade of practicing personal injury law, one of the hardest things I've witnessed is seeing injured and blameless riders forced into medical bankruptcy simply because their insurance coverage wasn't enough.
Here's the hard truth: you can't control how much insurance the driver who hits you carries. But you can control the coverage you have. That's why uninsured and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage is so important. If the at-fault driver doesn't have enough insurance—and many/most don't—your own policy may be what stands between you and a mountain of unpaid expenses.
Please, take a few minutes to review your policy, ask questions, and make sure you're protecting yourself and your family before you ride.
Ride safe. Ride smart. And make sure your insurance is working just as hard as you do.
